While far from denying the influence of heredity and other causes, I am fully convinced that functional disorder of the liver underlies the majority of gouty manifestations, and that the kidneys are only secondarily implicated. If this view be correct, it would seem to follow that the object of treatment should be not merely the neutralisation of the materies morbi by means of alkalies, but, in an especial manner, the restoration of the hepatic functions. How this is to be effected, I have described at some length in the chapter on treatment.
