Excerpt from The Goodwill Memorial: Or, the First One Hundred and Fifty Years of the Goodwill Presbyterian Church, Montgomery, Orange Co;, N. Y The germ-thought in commencing this simple monograph in its present form was that of justice to the memory of the noble men who have served in the Eldership of this Church and have gone to their reward - men whom the present and after generations cannot afford to have forgotten. Through out the work the strictest regard has been had to historical accuracy. The records in County Clerks' and Surrogates'l offices both at Kingston and Goshen, in addition to whatever private papers could be reached, have been carefully searched. Much new light has been thrown upon the field, necessitating a thorough revision of the Historical Discourse. An anthology of 50 stories about Vancouver and environs in the early years of the 20th century. These stories grew out of a collection of picture postcards -- not just any old postcards, but particularly appealing 'real photo' cards that seemed to be waiting to have their stories told. While some of the images are not uncommon, most of the pictures are rare, if not one-of-a-kind survivors of the 'golden age' of postcards, which encompassed the years between 1900 and 1914, the relatively short period of time when Vancouver ended its days as a frontier town and became a significant Canadian city.

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Americans with all sorts of disabilities came to be labeled as "unproductive citizens." Before that, disabled people had contributed as they were able in homes, on farms, and in the wage labor market, reflecting the fact that Americans had long viewed productivity as a spectrum that varied by age, gender, and ability. But as Sarah F. Rose explains in No Right to Be Idle, a perfect storm of public policies, shifting family structures, and economic changes effectively barred workers with disabilities from mainstream workplaces and simultaneously cast disabled people as morally questionable dependents in need of permanent rehabilitation to achieve "self-care" and "self-support." By tracing the experiences of policymakers, employers, reformers, and disabled people caught up in this epochal transition, Rose masterfully integrates disability history and labor history. She shows how people with disabilities lost access to paid work and the status of "worker--a shift that relegated them and their families to poverty and second-class economic and social citizenship. This has vast consequences for debates about disability, work, poverty, and welfare in the century to come.
