Excerpt from History and Reminiscences of Denton County In writing the history of Denton County and her pioneers, the task was found hard because of the fragmentary nature of her written history, and, on account of having to harmonize the discrepancies in her traditional history as related by the re maining pioneers. All of the early public records of the county. Were destroyed Christmas week, 1875, when the courthouse burned. Much of the county's traditionary history hasbeen consigned with her pioneers to the grave. The gathering and collecting of facts and the elimination of fiction have had our most careful at tention. But where so many conflicts in statements existed, some errors reasonably may be expected. And when writing of Den? Ton County we' must begin with it in its unorganized form as the western frontier of Fannin County; and share and share alike with all the counties carved out of this common territory, we must begin with its first settlement. The North American In dian claimed it as his hunting grounds; the Republic of Texas claimed it as her public domain, and through her agents, the Peters Colony, was making title, and a conflict at birth was on. Four Major Departments The four major departments are arranged in the following order: L the yellow pages constitute the first major department of the Directory. This embraces a complete list of the names and addresses of the business and professional concerns of the city and vicinity, arranged in alphabetical order under appropriate headings - a catalog of all the activities of the city and vicinity. Preceding this catalog, likewise grouped under appropriate headings, are the advertisements and business cards of firms and individuals desiring to present a more complete list of their products or service than is possible in the catalog itself. The Yellow Pages represent reference advertising at its best, and merit the attention of all buyers and sellers seeking sources of supply or markets for goods. In a progressive community like Kinston, the necessity of having this kind of information up-to date and always immediately avail able, is obvious. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller and plays an important role in the daily activities of the commercial, industrial and professional world.
