She would feel beautiful; she would be - well, at least, as nice as the rest. She'd laugh, chatter, be gay, be silly, even forget all the serious book learning that had always increased her isolation. Books were wonderful, but-humans, real live people were more important. They'd have to like her; oh, they would, they would! Anne dressed quickly, and her fingers trembled with excitement as she put on the green and silver dress. Mother looked up from the potatoes she was peeling for tomorrow's stew; her hot damp face beamed redly at Anne.
