The discovery of gold in 1848 catapulted California into statehood and triggered environmental, social, political, and economic events whose repercussions are still felt today. Mary Hill combines her scientific training with a flair for storytelling to present the history of gold in California from the distant geological past through the wild days of the Gold Rush to the present. The early days of gold fever drew would-be miners from around the world, many enduring great hardships to reach California. Once here, they found mining to be backbreaking work and devised machines to help recover gold. These machines pawed gravel from river bottoms and tore apart mountainsides, wreaking environmental havoc that silted rivers, ruined farmlands, and provoked the world's first environmental conflict settled in the courts. Native Americans were nearly wiped out by invading miners or their diseases, and many Spanish-speaking settlers—Californios—were pushed aside. Hill writes of gold's uses in today's world for everything from coins to coffins, gourmet foods to spacecraft. Her comprehensive overview of gold's impact on California includes illustrated explanations of geology and mining in nontechnical language as well as numerous illustrations, maps, and photographs.

Excerpt from Gold Mines and Mining in California: A New Gold Era Dawning on the State; Progress and Improvements Made in the Business; Perfected Methods, Processes and Machinery As remarked in the prospectus issued by the publishers of this book, we have at length so perfected the business of gold mining in California. Both as regards the methods, machinery and processes in use, that material of very low grade, whether quartz or gravel, can be handled with profit. Latterly very few failures have occurred in this business; fewer, perhaps, than in any other of our leading industries, nor are many likely to occur hereafter. As new conducted, it is, in fact, fully as safe as farming. Manufacturing, or merchandising, paying, at the same time far better than any of these. Leonard Kip (1826-1906), a young Albany lawyer, sailed for California in 1849. On his return east in 1850, Kip resumed the practice of law in Albany and published stories, articles, and novels. California sketches (1946) reprints accounts of his adventures that Kip sent home for newspaper publication and that were published as a pamphlet in 1850. The eight chapters describe his arrival in San Francisco, journey through Stockton to two months of gold-mining on the Mukelumne, and reasons for his abandonment of California.
