Since 2007 the world has lurched from one crisis to the next. The rise of new powers, the collapse of our global financial system, the proliferation of nuclear weapons and crisis in the Eurozone have led to a build up of risks that is likely to provoke a more general crisis in our system of global governance if it cannot be made fairer, more effective and accountable. In this book, nine leading scholars explore the fault lines and mounting challenges that are putting pressure on existing institutions, the ways in which we are currently attempting to manage them – or failing to – and the prospects for global governance in the 21st century. In doing so, the contributors offer a fresh look at one of the most important issues confronting the world today and they suggest strategies for adapting current institutions to better manage our mutual interdependence in the future. Contributors include Ha-Joon Chang, Benjamin Cohen, Michael Cox, David Held, George Magnus, Robert Skidelsky, Robert Wade, Martin Wolf and Kevin Young.

By defining the idea of "global risk" more specifically, Editors Innerarity and Solana, and their contributors, believe we can understand how these risks should be evaluated, predicted, and managed within the framework of democratic societies. The goal of this book is to highlight more precisely the necessity, in the face of new global risks, for new governance at a national, European, and global level.

Since 2007 the world has lurched from one crisis to another. The collapse of our global financial system, growing global economic imbalances, the crisis of the Eurozone, the proliferation of nuclear weapons and the mounting signs of climate change have led to a build up of risks that could well provoke a more general crisis in our system of governance if it cannot be made fairer, more effective and accountable. In this book, nine leading academics explore the mounting economic and political fault lines that are producing multiple sources of pressure on global institutions. They examine the ways in which these institutions are currently attempting to manage these pressures, and their shortcomings and failures. The authors offer a fresh look at one of the most important issues confronting the world today and suggest strategies for adapting current institutions to better manage our mutual interdependence in the future. Contributors include Ha–Joon Chang, Benjamin Cohen, Michael Cox, David Held, George Magnus, Charles Roger, Robert Skidelsky, Robert Wade, Martin Wolf and Kevin Young.

Since the 2014 Ebola outbreak many public- and private-sector leaders have seen a need for improved management of global public health emergencies. The effects of the Ebola epidemic go well beyond the three hardest-hit countries and beyond the health sector. Education, child protection, commerce, transportation, and human rights have all suffered. The consequences and lethality of Ebola have increased interest in coordinated global response to infectious threats, many of which could disrupt global health and commerce far more than the recent outbreak. In order to explore the potential for improving international management and response to outbreaks the National Academy of Medicine agreed to manage an international, independent, evidence-based, authoritative, multistakeholder expert commission. As part of this effort, the Institute of Medicine convened four workshops in summer of 2015 to inform the commission report. The presentations and discussions from the Governance for Global Health Workshop are summarized in this report.
