This volume deals with the integration of modern China into processes of global exchange and cross-border interaction. The articles explore the broader theme in different ways and in different subfields, ranging from the history of political ideas to the history of institutions, from global migration of people to the transmigration of academic discourses. Focusing on modern as well as contemporary periods, the studies demonstrate that China in the course of the twentieth century became an ever more important nodal point in a complex set of worldwide networks and engagements. The integration into global networks, together with the global consciousness that corresponded with it, made possible significant connections transcending national borders. The essays also show that the effects could be homogenizing (or globalizing), but at the same time the growing interactions also produced opposition and fragmentation.

A New York Times Editors' Pick and Paris Review Staff Pick "A wonderful book." --Patti Smith "I was riveted. Olsson is evocative on curiosity as an appetite of the mind, on the pleasure of glutting oneself on knowledge." --Parul Sehgal, The New York Times An eloquent blend of memoir and biography exploring the Weil siblings, math, and creative inspiration Karen Olsson’s stirring and unusual third book, The Weil Conjectures, tells the story of the brilliant Weil siblings—Simone, a philosopher, mystic, and social activist, and André, an influential mathematician—while also recalling the years Olsson spent studying math. As she delves into the lives of these two singular French thinkers, she grapples with their intellectual obsessions and rekindles one of her own. For Olsson, as a math major in college and a writer now, it’s the odd detours that lead to discovery, to moments of insight. Thus The Weil Conjectures—an elegant blend of biography and memoir and a meditation on the creative life. Personal, revealing, and approachable, The Weil Conjectures eloquently explores math as it relates to intellectual history, and shows how sometimes the most inexplicable pursuits turn out to be the most rewarding.

The Good Life and the Greater Good in a Global Context offers a timely contribution to the debates about the good life that surround us every day in the media, politics, the humanities, and social sciences. The authors’ examine the relationship between the good life and the greater good as represented across different genres, media, cultures, and disciplines. This enables them to develop a framework of values that transcends the overly rational and individualistic model of the good life advanced by neoliberalism and the “happiness industry.” Thus, over and against normative conceptualizations of the good life that reduce meaning to money, creativity to consumption, and compassion to self-help, the contributors propose an ethically charged philosophy of living that views the care for the self, for the other, and for the planet as the catalysts of true human flourishing. In addition to recovering the original usage of “the good life” from classical thought—especially the Aristotelian understanding of eudaimonia as living well and doing well—the essays gathered here highlight its entanglement with distinctly modern ideas of happiness, wellbeing, flourishing, progress, revolution, democracy, the American Dream, utopia, and sustainability. As such, the essays capture the breadth and depth of the conversation about the good life that is of central importance to how we relate to the past, engage the present, and envision the future.

The authors describe the important generalization of the original Weil conjectures, as given by P. Deligne in his fundamental paper "La conjecture de Weil II". The authors follow the important and beautiful methods of Laumon and Brylinski which lead to a simplification of Deligne's theory. Deligne's work is closely related to the sheaf theoretic theory of perverse sheaves. In this framework Deligne's results on global weights and his notion of purity of complexes obtain a satisfactory and final form. Therefore the authors include the complete theory of middle perverse sheaves. In this part, the l-adic Fourier transform is introduced as a technique providing natural and simple proofs. To round things off, there are three chapters with significant applications of these theories.

How a country competes in the world is the crucial factor in determining that country's ability to benefit from international trade in today's global economy. This book offers a complete and proper understanding of the meaning of international competitiveness, analyzes the implications it holds for an economy's progress, examines how it may be pursued and sustained at both the sectoral level (firms and industries) and the national level (strategic objectives). The author offers pertinent policy guidelines and prescriptions for how a nation can achieve and maintain international competitiveness in order to sustain the long-term prosperity of its industries, and hence the overall pace of economic growth. The book is arranged into three parts. Part I discusses and defines the theories of international competitiveness. Part II deals with policy issues, specifically the policy analysis of structural reforms for promoting a country's ability to compete, the impact of globalization and the role of Communication and Information Technology (CIT), strategic trade policies, and environmental issues. Part III analyzes the strategies used to pursue competitiveness. The book will be useful for researchers, students, and teachers of business and economics as well as policy makers, business practitioners, and international and governmental agencies.
