Excerpt from The History of Roxbury Town Another volume will complete the history of the Town, down to the date of the City Charter. The object has been, in this, to give the Early History. But no distinct line of division can be drawn. Much matter has necessarily been reserved for the appendix which will be added to the second part. The plan of the work has been, in order to secure for it the only merits such an one can ever have, accuracy and completeness. The materials that exist for gaining these ends are so much scattered, they are so often found where no one could have supposed they existed, that no diligence could ferret them out; but they are gladly furnished when it is known that use can be made of them. Since the last pages of the manuscript were sent to press, I have to acknowledge the receipt of several valuable communications. Any such is a great favor. It is my hope that all who can procure me access to materials that will aid in completing or correcting the account of the Town, will do so, so that the ends of this work will be secured. Excerpt from West Roxbury Magazine, 1900 We take pleasure in placing before the public this book containing many articles of historical value, throwing as they do so many side-lights on the history of West Roxbury and the life of the Rev. Theodore Parker. While portions of some of these articles have appeared before, they are now presented in a more complete form and from different points of view. We believe that all interested, either in the history of the place or the parish, will be glad to have the opportunity to secure Copies for themselves and for friends'at a distance. We wish to acknowledge our indebtedness to all who have furnished articles for the Magazine, but especially to the Rev. John H. Applebee for his carefully prepared article on the history of the parish, which was for years almost identical with the community; to the Hon. Frank B. Sanborn for the extract from Theodore Parker's Journal, and for the use of the Journal itself; and to Mrs. Ednah Cheney for her valuable contribution, showing Mr. Parker as the pastor and friend. Chögyam Trungpa is virtually synonymous with the transmission of Tibetan Buddhism to the West. Over the course of his seventeen-year teaching career in North America, Trungpa ushered in a radically new approach to spirituality—both rooted in the ancient wisdom of the buddhadharma and thoroughly situated in the contemporary world. His teachings, grounded in what he called the "Shambhala vision," focused on the development of an enlightened society through the transformation of ordinary, everyday life into sacred activity. Steering between Western biography and traditional Tibetan hagiography, Fabrice Midal takes you on a soaring journey through Trungpa’s life and teachings. Touching on all of the most momentous events, this series of glimpses into Chögyam Trungpa’s world provides a rare view on the formation of Trungpa’s thought and the remarkable body of teachings and writings that remain as his legacy. Included are accounts of: • Chögyam Trungpa’s education in Tibet under the tutelage of great tantric masters, like Jamgön Kongtrül of Sechen and Khenpo Gangshar • The founding of landmark centers for Buddhist practice and education, such as the Naropa Institute (now Naropa University), Karmê Chöling, and the Rocky Mountain Dharma Center (now the Shambhala Mountain Center) • Trungpa’s historic meeting with the sixteenth Gyalwa Karmapa in 1974, the first-ever visit of the Karmapa to America • Behind-the-scenes stories of Trungpa’s most treasured writings, including Meditation in Action, Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism, and Shambhala: The Sacred Path of the Warrior • And much more
