Excerpt from Last Gleanings He left the Colony without the health for which he sought its Shores. He started and edited a newspaper in London; he wrote for the London daily press and other first-class English periodi cals he published two or three little books which our most fastidious critics praised; he founded the London Library Company, became its first secretary, and just when it began to flourish, he died - only thirty years Of age - his naturally weak and sickness-shattered frame completely worn out by work. He left a clearly beloved wife and young family almost unprovided for, in spite Of all his efi'orts to secure their comfort. It is for their sake that these Last Gleanings from his desk have been garnered. How he loved his home, and those who made it home, may be guessed from the following extract from a series Of 'etchings' he wrote for his newspaper. Excerpt from Gleanings by the Way By such knowledge - and this is precisely the information a preface ought to convey - they avoid the trouble of reading many a volume, which had the author been of the same mind, he might have escaped the trouble of writing. To this class of readers the preface is an important part of the book: while to those who eschew every thing of this sort, it will give but little trouble, to turn over a leaf or two to the commencement of the first chapter. We did not mean, when we began, to write a defence of prefaces - but to write a preface to our own work. The name of this volume, Gleanings By The Way, indicates the character of the work. It consists principally of thoughts gathered up - and sketches of scenery, and incidents, that came before the author during excursions made into the country at different periods, within the last four years. For several years the author has been labouring under infirm health, and has found it necessary after encountering the heavy pastoral duties and labours connected with a large city congregation for nine or ten months in succession, to retire from the scene of his ministerial duties, and seek to recruit his wasted strength and enfeebled health amid the retirement of rural life, or the diversified scenes of travel and journeying. During these seasons of relaxation, the author desired still to be engaged in something that might at least indirectly promote the interests of religion. This volume contains some of the things of which he at such seasons made a record. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Gleanings Old S. Paul's As the kind and indulgent readers of my little book Chapters in the History of Old S. Paul's, have been so good as to leave but few copies on the Publisher s shelves, and as that Publisher has himself asked for another and similar work, I venture hopefully to issue these Gleanings from Old S. Paul's, in bright and genial autumn weather - gleaning-time. Eight-and-twenty years have passed since, to my infinite and never-ceasing delight, I became, a Member on the foundation of this venerable Cathedral of S. Paul. Now, as then, every point in its story is full of interest for me. If the field of its grand History has been reaped already, there are abundant Gleanings to be gathered. Excerpt from Gleanings After "Grand Tour"-Ists To us by him who knoweth whereof we are made and, being as we are, if in our course through this world our glances never fell on aught but the side the sun's upon, the result would very shortly be a tired and wom out optic nerve, not to mention other and more fearful physical evils. What is true of the earthy tabernacle is also true of the undying tenant within. Morally as well as physically, the alternations of shade and i' sun - sweet and bitter, rough and smooth - are in all respects best for us, most suitable and wholesome; in fact, essen tial to our well-being. It was a wise and Divine philo sophy which, long ago, taught a living man to walk uncomplaining in a dark and thorny road, and to say, What! Shall we receive good, and shall we not receive evil at the hand of the Lord? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
