Excerpt from Germany as It Is to-Day A friend of mine, Governor of a Crown Colony, a man of great experience and erudi tion, recently wrote to me as follows, I shall look forward to your book on Germany, but can one speak freely? If you say anything for the Germans, you are labelled a pro-german at once. If you say anything against them, you are accused of making more bad blood between them and us. What is wanted is a cold, impartial statement of fact. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Germany of to-Day United Germany is a young and vigorous nation. So is the United States of America. The better the two understand one another, the better for both. The more profitable will be their mutual relations in the time to come. It is just that I should say that any sympathy which I feel for Germany has no other source than an intimate acquaintance extending over many years. I have no German blood in my veins. My family has been American as long as there has been an American nation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Germany to the Present Day: A Short History It is a truism that if we are to understand a disagreement at all, we must realise the point of view of the two parties to the dispute. How many Englishmen consider the point of view Of the average German with reference to German armaments, or have troubled to place themselves in his position, to realise the weight of certain historical facts that necessarily affect German Opinion? Excerpt from The Political, Social, and Literary History of Germany From the Commencement to the Present Day Holy Empire like a Colossus, till the blasts of Moscow and the field of Waterloo robbed him of all his hangings, - yea, his leaves, - and left him bare to weather. Where has the struggle with papacy been more bravely fought? Where has the struggle of the burgher class, where that with the Corsican Sesostris been so graphically played out? For my own part I have been intensely interested, and hope that I have infused some portion of the interest I have felt in the pages I have written. The object I have kept in view has been to give bold broad outlines of German history, and to supply in smaller type the fullest detail. Those who wish to gain at a glance a general idea may read the larger type; those who would pick up the crumbs may consult the smaller under the heading of Chief Events. Excerpt from After the Day: Germany Unconquered and Unrepentant One Englishman of my acquaintance, desirous of buying surgical instruments in the Black Forest district, gave me an illuminating account of his visit to the Foreign Office in Whitehall. If you go in to Germany, the Government official told him, you will do SO at your own risk. If you get hit over the head or stabbed in the back, don't expect the British Army to come to your assistance. It won't! Excerpt from German Life in Town and Country Iunity, Germany was little more than a geographi cal expression, and more than half a century had yet to pass before the movement which he and countless other patriots, both of the pen and the sword, laboured and lived to advance, took practical form. Only in 1871 did Germany as we now know it become united, but the unity then cemented proved very different from that which most of the national leaders of Arndt's day anticipated, since the largest of the German States was excluded from the ring-fence which Prince Bismarck drew around the twenty-five sovereignties which still retained their independ ence, and to which, with due regard to the tra dition of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation, which came to an end in 1800, he gave the name of German Empire. Excerpt from Modern Germany and the Modern World The Committee of the Victoria League have asked me to write a short account of the place of Modern Germany in the Modern World, explaining how, in spite of the intellectual and other services which Germany has rendered to our present-day civilisation, her national policy has yet been poisoned by sinister and selfish aims. That policy has during recent years been a growing menace to the peace of Europe. It is now the open and desperate enemy of some ideas and principles which we of the British Empire hold dearer than life itself. Those who are responsible for German policy have thought it well to force on a life and death struggle between their ideals and ours. Like gamblers, they have staked all on the cast. They hoped, perhaps, that at this juncture we should stand aside. In that case they, the men responsible for German policy, planned first to crush France so mercilessly that she could never stand in their path again: next, to beat back the Russian invasion, and then patch up a peace with the Slavs: and finally to concentrate their stupendous power in an attack on the British Empire, bent upon breaking us and (by diplomatic pressure if possible, or, failing that, by force) lowering us into a state of vassalage to Berlin. But they miscalculated. Their reading of our character was wrong. They underrated our national spirit. They exaggerated the depth of our party divisions.
