The history and purpose of the Reiseberichte uber Nordamerika (Reports of an inspection tour in North America), of which this bulletin presents a partial synopsis, will best appear in the following statements from the preface of the Reiseberichte. The Prussian House of Deputies, on the 4th of June, 1902, requested the Prussian Government to institute a number of measures for the promotion of the smaller industries. In compliance with this request, the minister of commerce and industry in the year 1903 sent commissioners to southern Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and England to gather data of interest and value for Prussian conditions. In the year 1904 it was decided, on occasion of the St. Louis Exposition, to extend these studies to the United States and to appoint a suitable commission for this purpose. After a short stay in New York they entered upon their studies in St. Louis. Here the extensive and rich Educational Department of the Exposition afforded a most favorable opportunity to gain a comprehensive view of the school conditions of the United States; here also the further plans of the journey were determined upon. In the preparation of this bulletin, the chief purpose has been to present the impressions of the commissioners as baldly as possible, and only in so far as they touch upon matters of education in their bearing upon industrial development, in order to afford an opportunity to see ourselves in this work as others see us who know how to look and what to look for. An index is included. Individual sections contain footnotes. [Collated from the reports of the Royal Prussian Industrial Commission of 1904. Best copy available has been provided.].

In the last twenty years, transnational perspectives have gained momentum in the field of historical-educational research. Scholars have made substantial efforts to rethink nation-based historiographies by reconstructing and reinterpreting the cross-border encounters and intertwined processes that have turned the history of education into a transnational enterprise. A closer look at specific transnational spaces furthers a better understanding of these processes. Against this backdrop, the book offers case studies focusing on transatlantic encounters with special regard to the manifold entanglements between Germany and the United States of America that represent one of the most complex, dynamic, and vivid educational spaces between the eighteenth and twentieth century. Drawing on excellent source material, each contribution examines interaction processes as the genuine transformative moment within any cross-border transfer, and investigates exchanges of concepts, institutions, and materials. Under this premise, the book draws attention to shifting trajectories in the German-American history of education that can be identified by focusing on long-lasting transnational entanglements. By offering a wide range of research approaches, the publication furthermore contributes innovative methodological thoughts to transnational histories of education that go beyond the German-American context and will interest students, emerging researchers, and experts of history of education.

What do citizens of the United States and Germany think about their schools and school policies? This paper offers the first broad comparison of public thinking on education in the two countries. We carried out opinion surveys of representative samples of the German and American adult populations in 2014 that included experiments in which we provided additional information to randomly selected subgroups. The paper first describes key characteristics of the U.S. and German education systems and then analyzes how information and institutional context affect public beliefs in the two countries. Results indicate both similarities and differences in the structure of American and German public opinion on schools and school policies. Contains a Methodological Appendix. [Paper prepared for the conference on Public Opinion and the Political Economy of Education, Munich, May 9, 2015. Financial support was provided by the Leibniz Association.].
