Excerpt from German American Annals, 1913, Vol. 15: Continuation Of The Quarterly Americana Germanica; A Bi-Monthly Devoted To The Comparative Study Of The Historical, Literary, Linguistic, Educational And Commercial Relations Of Germany And America Strubberg occupies a unique position in the history of German letters. He was led to a literary career by the merest accident, but for the intervention of which he might have ended his days as a planter in Arkansas. Far from being a literary man, not even widely read in his own literature, much less in a foreign, we see him publishing his first work in his fifty-second year. Influenced by no literary tendency, a member of no literary school, he wrote, so to speak, frei von der Leber. A normal man, physically strong, and mentally alert, he possessed a good store of that knowl edge and wisdom which is acquired by one who has been about the world and thrown on his own resources. He sought to express that which he had seen, experienced, and heard, in a simple, straightforward manner. There are but few literary allusions and little conformity to the prescribed forms of art. Having lived a life which again proves that truth is stranger than fiction, it is but natural that on having the pen pressed in his hand he should draw on his own varied experiences. Excerpt from German American Annals, 1913, Vol. 15: Continuation Of The Quarterly Americana Germanica Bern, Graffenried had friends in England, he was not past the prime of life (born in 1661 his prospects seemed brilliant. In July, 1710, he set sail from England as Landgrave of Carolina, but alas with a title greater than his power and purse. The dith cul-ties, successes and failures of the colony at New Bern, which he founded, are narrated in a number of manuscripts, among them the German manuscript, which is printed for the first time below. The note of disappointment that prevai_ls is relieved some what by the subjoined letters of the colonists, who express very great satisfaction with their new home. Like many other found ers of colonies, Graffenried never reaped the reward of his labors, though they subsequently bore abundant fruit. His old enemy, debt, was the main cause of his failure, for persistent, courageous and energetic he was, though seeming to desert his enterprise. Mistrusted and maligned he returned to Bern, in December, 1713, only to meet the cold reception which wealthy peer5 will grant a bankrupt.
