Science Fiction's Original Classic Magazine! This digitally reproduced full edition replica of Galaxy Science Fiction's ground-breaking magazine issue from November 1950 has been brought back to life for a new generation of fans to enjoy! Stories by Isaac Asimov, Fritz Leiber, Theodore Sturgeon and more! Explore the possibilities of life in the future from the perspective of the 1950's pre-spaceflight era. Several of the stories and commentaries in this 65+ year-old publication are stunningly accurate, while others are amusingly way off base . . .or are they??. All are well written and entertaining, with beautiful illustrations and advertisements in the classic 1950's comic book style. Along with commentary by editor H.L. Gold, each Galaxy issue also contains a book review column by anthologist Groff Conklin, and a Willy Ley science column. The stories in this magazine are written by some of science fiction's most beloved authors, including Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Robert Sheckley, Fritz Leiber, Frederik Pohl & C.M. Kornbluth, just to name a few. This December 1950 issue does not disappoint with stories from Clifford D. Simak and Richard Matheson, among others. Established in 1950, Galaxy Science Fiction was a pioneer in Science Fiction magazine publishing. Original editor H. L. Gold was interested in sociology, psychology, and other "soft" sciences, and was also willing to publish humorous and satirical stories. Science Fiction historian David Kyle commented in his book A Pictorial History of Science Fiction, 1979, that "of all the editors in and out of the post-war scene, the most influential beyond any doubt was H. L. Gold". The editorship of Galaxy passed from H.L. Gold to Frederik Pohl and then to Ejler Jakobsson during the 1960s. Welcome to The 11th Science Fiction MEGAPACK®! We hope you will enjoy the stories we have selected for you this time. There's a greater emphasis than usual on Golden Age writers (just the way it came together) -- but we have one original story as well, a posthumous collaboration with H.B. Fyfe, finishing a really terrific but not-quite-done tale he had been working on before his death. It's a bit reminiscent of James Tiptree, Jr.'s best work -- but predates Tiptree by a couple of decades. And we have novels by Robert Silverberg, Frederik Pohl & C.M. Kornbluth, Murray Leinster, E. Everett Evans, and Donald Wollheim...not to mention part 2 of our serialization of Tony Rothman's mammoth 2013 novel, Firebird. And a ton of great short stories. 36 works in all, more than 1900 pages of great reading! ANGELS IN THE JETS, by Jerome Bixby A CODE FOR SAM, by Lester del Rey STAR SHIP, by Poul Anderson THE WELL-OILED MACHINE, by H.B. Fyfe JACK OF NO TRADES, by Evelyn E. Born in 1904, Clifford D. Simak sold his first science fiction story in 1930, and was soon publishing widely in the pulp magazines. He also pursued a separate career as a journalist and writer on science and other popular topics. He gained widespread fame in the SF world with the first of his series of "City" stories, published in Astounding Science Fiction in 1944; these were collected together in the book of the same title, which has remained almost continuously in print ever since. Simak was best known for his pastoral and humanitarian themes, as exemplied in his Hugo Award-winning novel, Way Station (1963). In later years he wrote both fantasy and SF stories and novels, winning many additional accolades for his work. He died in 1988. Robert J. Ewald provides the first extended look at Simak's writing, from his earliest pulp stories to the sophistical fiction of his later years. Complete with Chronology, Notes, Primary and Secondary Bibliographies, and detailed Index.
