The development of fundamental and applied research on ferro-alloys at the National Institute for Metallurgy, South Africa, is reviewed. Examples are given of the results obtained and the projects at present in progress. Important features of this research have been the initial accumulation of basic information and the initiation of sponsored projects with industry. The benefits derived by the interaction between the National Institute for Metallurgy and the ferro-alloy industry are illustrated by suitable examples.
