This series started in 1981 with the Erice Seminars when the danger of a nuclear East-West confrontation was menacing the world. The volumes reproduce the crucial steps, from the Nuclear Winter to the Strategic Defense Initiative. After the collapse of the U.S.S.R., new emergencies are now to be faced such as the danger of proliferation of Weapons for Mass Destruction (WMD), the North-South confrontation on ecological problems and the new deal for Science and Technology to help developing countries in their struggle for a better standard of life. The Erice Seminars have attracted the attention of world leaders in Science, Technology and Culture.

AIDS: An African Perspective is the first authoritative account that provides an overview of the AIDS problem in Africa. Written by an African scientist who has worked for over two decades comparing diseases prevalent in Africa to those of the developed world, the book addresses a number of topics relevant to the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with AIDS and HIV infections in Africa. The book presents the results of new research (including new hypotheses and terminology) and outlines recommendations for the control of AIDS in Africa as presented to the African Ministers of Health in 1989 in Uganda. The molecular biology and viral pathogenesis of HIV-1 and HIV-2 are discussed, as is the epidemiology of HTLV-I in the African diaspora. Little known bibliographic references, written in English and other languages, are also provided. AIDS: An African Perspective will be useful to scholars, researchers, and students in epidemiology, public health, pathology, internal medicine, infectious diseases, immunology, virology, oncology, molecular biology, sociology, and anthropology. It will be invaluable to members of the medical, dental, nursing, and laboratory technology community, particularly for individuals who work or intend to work in Africa or Third World scenarios. NEW INFORMATION FOR THE MEDICAL WORLD The book presents new research and terminology to the medical world. These are described briefly below: Molecular analyses of recent and archival tissues for HIV-1 DNA sequences using PCR on paraffin-embedded tissues from Africans with Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) before and after the onset of the AIDS epidemic were studied for the first time and comparisons made with similar studies carried out on tissues from American Blacks and Hispanics in North America. Immunohistochemical studies using monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies to HIV on African AIDS tissues and electronmicroscopy were also carried out and reported for the first time. The term Kaposigenesis is being introduced into the medical literature for the first time to describe the development of Kaposi's sarcoma. The author proposes to outline the possible mechanisms for its development and to harmonize the current diverse views about the histagenesis of this enigmatic malignancy. The author also proposes a classification of KS that utilizes the etiologic role of retroviruses as an important distinguishing factor.

For over 25 years the study of retroviruses has underpinned much of what is known about information transfer in cells and the genetic and biochemical mechanisms that underlie cell growth and cancer induction. Emergent diseases such as AIDS and adult T-cell lymphoma have widened even further the community of investigators directly concerned with retroviruses, a development that has highlighted the need for an integrated understanding of their biology and their unique association with host genomes. This remarkable volume satisfies that need. Written by a group of the field's most distinguished investigators, rigorously edited to provide a seamless narrative, and elegantly designed for clarity and readability, this book is an instant classic that demands attention from scientists and physicians studying retroviruses and the disorders in which they play a role.
