Join award-winning writer Lynn Houser on a nostalgic journey through time in this collection of works going back to 1972. From his days as a student at Indiana University, to his eight years at a small Indiana daily, to his 28 years at the Bloomington (Ind.) Herald-Times, the author finds a common thread in the legendary Bob Knight. Four chapters are devoted entirely to the former Hooser coach, covering his rise and his demise at IU, followed by his final landing at Texas Tech. This author goes beyond Bob Knight, though. As a writer who also covered high school and professional sports, Houser canvases a wide variety of subjects, not the least of which is Bobby Wampler, a courageous young man you can't help but like. This book is unique blend of topics and styles - from beat writing, to feature writing to column writing and it includes illustrations. In addition to having personal contact witht the likes of Bobby Knight, the author can honestly drop a few more names: Mickey Mantle, Larry Bird, Michael Jordan, Reggie Miller and Peyton Manning. They are all within the covers of this book, a little something for everybody and a stylish piece for your coffee table. -- back cover.

This Festschrift is a collection of essays contributed by students, colleagues, and ad mirers to honor an eminent scholar on a special anniversary: Charles Hard Townes on the occasion of his 80th birthday, July 28, 1995. In 1964, Townes shared the Nobel Prize in physics with Alexander Mikhailovich Prokhorov and Nikolai Gen nadyevich Basov "for fundamental work in the field of quantum electronics, which has led to the construction of oscillators and amplifiers based on the maser-laser principle. " His contributions have covered a much wider area, however. His fruitful interests spanning several decades have included many scientific subjects, includ ing, microwave spectroscopy and astrophysics (other articles in this volume will expand further on this point). He has also contributed to public service, having served as the chairman of the Science and Technology Advisory Committee for NASA's Apollo program, and as a member and vice chairman of the President's Science Advisory Committee. As the enormous breadth of contributions from his students shows, he has educated scholars who are now in a wide range of fields. The contributions from his many admirers, among whom are nine fellow Nobel laureates, attest to his impact on many disciplines ranging from electrical engi neering to medicine. His influence extends even to theology, as is indicated by one essay. The broadly international character of this Festschrift reflects his deep belief in the international, universal nature of science.

This book offers a biography of the most glamorous and powerful NATO Supreme Commander of the Cold War, General Lauris Norstad, as both a "nuclear" general and an "international" general. His primary goal was to keep the Alliance together as he accommodated British and French nuclear ambitions while forestalling the same in West Germany. He also was at the center of the political/military maneuverings over Berlin and the Soviet attempt to blackmail the West into recognizing East Germany, all of which culminated in the building of the infamous "Wall."

The popular image of Scotland is dominated by widely recognized elements of Celtic culture. But a significant non-Celtic influence on Scotland's history has been largely ignored for centuries? This book argues that much of Scotland's history and culture from 1100 forward is Jewish. The authors provide evidence that many of the national heroes, villains, rulers, nobles, traders, merchants, bishops, guild members, burgesses, and ministers of Scotland were of Jewish descent, their ancestors originating in France and Spain. Much of the traditional historical account of Scotland, it is proposed, rests on fundamental interpretive errors, perpetuated in order to affirm Scotland's identity as a Celtic, Christian society. A more accurate and profound understanding of Scottish history has thus been buried. The authors' wide-ranging research includes examination of census records, archaeological artifacts, castle carvings, cemetery inscriptions, religious seals, coinage, burgess and guild member rolls, noble genealogies, family crests, portraiture, and geographic place names.
