Excerpt from French Composition The author hopes these exercises will prove interesting. They aim to give to descriptions of French life and scenes the human touch too often lacking in composition texts. Entertainment cannot, however, be the main consideration. To be useful, exercises must be practical. The word practical, as used here, means this: Exercises must supply abundant practice in the use of all constructions which the pupil studies. It is futile, for instance, to make him study partitive articles, and then include only two or three partitives in the corresponding exercises. Only when such constructions are abundant can the pupil learn to apply his rules correctly. Each lesson contains three sections. Section A consists of detached sentences affording copious illustrative material. B and C are in connected prose, but abound in the constructions the pupil has been studying. C is somewhat more difficult than B and may be used either for additional practice, for alternate exercises, or for a second review course. In general it may be said that lessons can be readily divided, the order of sections changed, and the work otherwise adapted to the needs of the class. At the head of each lesson are given topics for grammatical study. No rules are printed, but subjects are assigned such as are treated in any good grammar. The second is composed - entirely of excerpts from English or American newspapers and magazines. Wherever it has been found possible, the names of the publications quoted have been given. Excerpt from First French Composition The story of First French Composition can be told in a few words. We could not find for the teaching of elementary French composition a book that contained enough very simple material. So we made one. One reason, we think, that formal written-work has not been taught earlier, for a longer period, and better in our high schools, is that teachers have realized the book for their purpose did not exist. These words should not be construed to mean that there are not several excellent composition manuals in the field we say merely that in our opinion they do not offer a goodly amount of extremely simple, natural, and concrete material. We shall not be content unless First French Composition is found to be a most practical book for use during the second year of French in secondary schools, even in those which have only a two years' course. It is not graded in the sense that it begins with easy words and phrases and ends with long puzzle-sentences which illustrate every conceivable manner of syntactic difficulty. First French Composition is easy at the beginning, in the middle, and at the end. It aims to give the student constant opportunity to write, and write, and write the sort of simple idiomatic French sentence thathe must know before he can work out long problems in philosophical diction. It is practice that makes perfect, and to practise a thing means; to do it over and over again and then yet again. Excerpt from Selections for French Composition This book was written in response to a general demand for an easy but comprehensive manual that could be used both in colleges and in schools. Its leading characteristic, as compared with similar works, is the nature of the English texts, which though I have tried to make them sufficiently idiomatic - are all so constructed that, when translated, they will be real French, and not English written with French words. Parts I. And II. Follow the imitative method; the others are taken from French sources. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from French Composition: A Trip to Paris Another mode of procedure might be to use the ques tion and answer method. There is nothing better for this purpose. A few questions on the French text will be found in this book; others will readily suggest themselves to the teacher. The retranslation method may also be recommended as of great value. Finally, it will prove helpful to have the difficult words and idioms underlined and learned by heart. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The First Book of French Composition: Materials for Translating English Into French The pieces for translation in the First Part are preceded by a Rule and a Vocabulary. Those in the Second Part are preceded by a Vocabulary only. The Rules are thirty-eight in number. These relate to the position which certain English words should occupy in French, the manner of translating them, and the way of rendering certain tournures which, though common in English, are not admissible in French.
