Excerpt from Free Trade in Being British Free Trade is a singular pheno menon in the world, and appears to me to be worthy of study and analysis, apart from the soundness of its theoretic economic basis, for great populations are not governed by economic principles, sound or unsound. Excerpt from The Rise and Decline of the Free Trade Movement This volume consists of the substance of a course which I gave in the Michaelmas Term of 1903; it was planned with the view of presenting to members of the University a dispassionate survey of the main issues involved in the present fiscal controversy. The lectures have been written out from notes which were taken at the time by my daughter, who has also helped me in supplying additional illustrations. Complaint was made by some of my audience that they could not tell which side I took. I fear I do not know for certain what my views might have been in 1783, or 1823 or 1846; I have never speculated about pre-natal political affinities. As to the impending issue, the case is different. It hardly seems possible that any one, who has been influenced by the political ideas of Sir John Seeley and is true to the economic teaching of Adam Smith, should hesitate. I hope to march with the men who have wisdom to reconsider a decision, honesty to acknowledge a blunder, and courage to try to retrieve it. The demand for a second edition has given me the opportunity of making a few trifling emendations. I have also added to the volume two lectures which have been already published in pamphlet form. Excerpt from Free Trade Life is full of surprises, but few things have astonished me more than the idea that England is being ruined by Free Trade. Yet we frequently hear, even sometimes from high official authorities, very gloomy apprehensions both as to the present condition and future prospects of British commerce. The facts do not seem to me to justify these melancholy forebodings. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Free Trade a Failure, From the First In making this small contribution to the mass of literature already published on the great Fiscal Policy sketched out by Mr. Chamberlain in his historic speech at Birmingham on 15th May 1903, I have endeavoured to confine myself, as far as possible, to matters which have not (to my knowledge) been brought prominently before the public. Particularly has this been my object in the examination of the conditions prevailing in the United Kingdom near the end of the first half of the nineteenth century, when Sir Robert Peel adopted Mr. Cobden's Free Trade Policy; and also in my analysis of the causes which produced the great commercial expansion that followed, after an interval of a few years, the inauguration of this policy. Brought up in an implicit belief in the virtues and advantages of Free Trade, it was not until ten years ago that I began to have any misgivings as to the truth of the opinions I had held from my youth up. Excerpt from Free Trade Versus Fair Trade For the following pages I am alone responsible. They contain an attempt to illustrate established truths, and to expose exploded - though not obsolete fallacies; but they-trench so closely on the politics of the day that I should have scarcely felt justified in writing them for publication without the encourage ment of the President of the Board of Trade.
