This book aims to introduce the principle and design of various foundations, covering shallow foundations, mat foundations, earth retaining structures, excavations, pile foundations, and slope stability. Since the analysis and design of a foundation are based on the soil properties under short-term (undrained) or long-term (drained) conditions, the assessment of soil properties from the geotechnical site investigation and the concept of drained or undrained soil properties are discussed in the first two chapters. Foundation elements transfer various load combinations from the superstructure to the underlying soils or rocks. The load transfer mechanisms, vertical stress or earth pressure distributions, and failure modes of each foundation type are clearly explained in this book. After understanding the soil responses subjected to the loadings from the foundation, the design methods, required factors of safety, and improvement measures for each foundation type are elaborated. This book presents both theoretical explication and practical applications for readers to easily comprehend the theoretical background, design methods, and practical applications and considerations. Each chapter provides relevant exercise examples and a problem set for self-practice. The analysis methods introduced in the book can be applied in actual analysis and design as they contain the most up-to-date knowledge of foundation design. This book is suitable for teachers and students to use in foundation engineering courses and engineers who are engaged in foundation design to create a technically sound, construction-feasible, and economical design of the foundation system.

Guidelines concerning what grantseekers should know about foundations before they ask for money and how to find the facts needed to obtain a grant are presented. There are basically three types of private foundations (independent, operating, and company-sponsored) and one type of public foundation (community foundations) that are of interest to grantseekers. It is suggested that nonprofit organizations should explore their eligibility for federal funding carefully before approaching any other funding source. Corporations give through separately established foundations and through corporate contributions programs operated within their companies. Individuals are also a significant source of funding. Larger foundations differ from small foundations in a number of significant ways, which are of importance to grantees. Data on funding patterns of all foundations by asset categories and grant categories are presented, along with data on assets, grants, and gifts of foundations by state. Suggestions to provide alternative funding possibilities for individuals and organizations that lack official nonprofit status are offered. Specific steps for finding foundations that are in the grantseeker's geographic area and that are interested in the grantseeker's field are examined. Research steps for learning about a foundation and details on the information sources are presented, along with a proposal checklist, and an IRS form for tax exempt private foundations. Appended materials include a sample subject search, geographic searches, a bibliography of area foundation directories, and a list of reference collections operated by the Foundation Center. (SW)

A sense of fatigue dogs the fitness world. Many of the new programs that are tagged as groundbreaking are actually recycled ideas. Foundation offers something completely different for novices and athletes alike: a simple program with powerful and proven results that will remedy bad posture, alleviate back pain, and help readers break through fitness challenges and plateaus. Dr. Eric Goodman, a brilliant and dynamic young chiropractor, teams up with Peter Park, one of the top trainers in the United States, to radically redefine the core--shifting the focus from the front of the body to the back. Their groundbreaking approach works to strengthen the lower back and the full posterior chain and correct poor movement patterns by addressing mechanical imbalances and weaknesses. Foundation training involves simple movement patterns and is equipment free, creating maximum power, flexibility, and endurance. Word-of-mouth enthusiasm has inspired both Hollywood luminaries and world-class athletes to make Foundation training the core of their fitness programs. Eric and Peter's client list has grown exponentially to include Lance Armstrong, NBA star Derek Fisher, world-champion surfer Kelly Slater, and actor Matthew McConaughey.

""In writing an article, a professional writer has a plan before he ever sits down in front of the computer to compose those first words. Chances are he has written an outline -- whether it's a traditional one or a cluster one -- that tells him exactly where he's going with the article. His article's doorways won't collapse." "I believe, then, that an outline is necessary to create a well-written article. Whatever type of writer you are -- whether you are a highly-organized one who writes formal, A-B-C-1-2-3 outlines or a let-me-do-my-work-in-my-pajamas writer who utilizes very informal outlines -- an outline will make you better prepared for the task of writing your article." "Should you use an outline, then? Yes, because: (1) they keep you organized, (2) they encourage thematic unity, and (3) they can inspire you.""-- Cheryl Sloan Wray
