With a hilarious, tell-it-like-it-is, girlfriend-to-girlfriend tone, author Carolyn Evans provides married women with an innovative method that is sure to breathe new life into their marital relationship. The Forty Beads Method works by dissolving the negative tension that builds around sex (specifically, the frequency with which it does or does not occur) and replacing it with the sex life you always thought you should have, which in turn creates the relationship you've always wanted. In 40 short chapters, author Carolyn Evans illuminates her readers in psychologically-savvy detail why sex is so important to the success of a marriage, and exactly how to put it to the front burner of their relationship in a playful, fun way.

This doctoral thesis reintroduces Juliane von Krüdener, a largely forgotten historic figure, back into historical awareness. Particular attention is given to her role as a female missionary in Europe within the church history context of pietism and revival movements at the beginning of the 19th century. The investigation revolves around the question: to what extent did this aristocratic ambassador's wife not just stir hearts, but also have a transforming influence on the mission history of Europe? In addition von Krüdener's specific female contribution is investigated. The climax of von Krüdener's missionary activity occurs between 1815 and 1818. It covers the time of her special influence on Tsar Alexander I, her missionary travels through Switzerland and Germany, and her effect on the spiritual revival movements happening in Western and Eastern Europe. This Baltic-German missionary used various social networks, in particular the transnational and interdenominational network of the salon-culture, as inroads for her missional lifestyle. The basis for the missiological role analysis in this paper is a thematic investigation into the life and activities of Juliane von Krüdener. What stands out is the fact that her missionary role, apart from her activities as Salonnière, writer and evangelist, also included charitable and political dimensions. This case study on Juliane von Krüdener is an interdisciplinary research contribution, but is also the first to offer extensive research from a theological perspective. It addresses foundational questions about the role of women in mission and church history and is a testimony to the significant contribution of women to revival-transformative processes during the 19th century.

The Native American rescue artist goes back on the job in “another excellently engineered thriller” from the New York Times–bestselling mystery author (Marilyn Stasio, The New York Times Book Review). After two decades protecting innocent victims on the run, and a year after getting shot on the job, Jane McKinnon, née Whitefield, has settled into the quiet life of a suburban housewife in Amherst, New York. But that all changes when she sees all eight female leaders of the Tonawanda Seneca clan parked in her driveway in two black cars. Jimmy, a childhood friend of Jane’s from the reservation, has been accused of murdering a local white man. But instead of turning himself in, he’s fled, and no one knows where he’s hiding. At the clan mothers’ request, Jane retraces a walking trip she and Jimmy took together when they were fourteen in hopes that he has gone the same way again. But it turns out the police are the least of Jimmy’s problems, and soon enough Jimmy and Jane are on the run together in this “first-rate suspense” novel from the Edgar Award–winning author (Booklist, starred review). “Whitefield is an indelible figure—whip-smart, resourceful, brave and big-hearted.” —The Seattle Times “Jane Whitefield is unique in the annals of detective fiction. She is a throwback to a tribal world, still loyal to the beliefs of the Seneca Indians and still adhering to the call of a lost era. Thomas Perry has once again resurrected a remarkable character who seems imbued with a strange immortality and an unusual morality, and he is to be congratulated.” —The Washington Times

“This fantastic starting point for those beginning in the art of beadwork aptly covers the long record of the art form throughout the world.”—Booklist French mourning wreaths‚ Ukrainian Easter eggs, Norwegian bodices, Chinese slippers, Pakistani hair tassels, Egyptian belly-dancing outfits, Maasai wedding dresses, Sioux moccasins . . . from Greenland to Bali, beadwork from all over the world is illustrated and its history revealed. The earliest drawn glass beads were produced from around 200 BC in various locations in India and exported for centuries along the major trade routes to Africa and Asia. From the sixteenth century on, beads made in Europe became highly desirable trade items and spread throughout the world. This book is organized into five sections, with more than forty topics in all. Each of four main regional sections—Africa; the Americas; Europe; and Asia, Oceania, and the Arabian Gulf—outlines the history of beads in that area before examining production in detail. A fifth section surveys techniques, from brick stitch and herringbone weave to lazy stitch and three-dimensional structures. Includes information on collecting and conserving beadwork and a list of public collections around the world.
