“Fortification of Topical Minoxidil with Finasteride”: An account of upkeep of hair density after replacing oral Finasteride. Finasteride reduces DHT level by inhibiting type II 5α reductase, the enzyme responsible for conversion of testosterone to DHT, thereby inhibiting miniaturization of hair follicles. It also promotes the anagen phase of hair growth. Oral intake of finasteride reduces DHT levels in the blood and causes side effects such as decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, etc., Once oral finasteride is stopped, the DHT level rises and reverses its effects, thereby resulting in less dense hair. This accounts for an indefinite period of oral finasteride treatment. Studies show that topical finasteride appears to have results equivalent to oral finasteride in AGA and has better tolerance. Therefore, the study was conducted to assess the efficacy of topical minoxidil fortified with finasteride in the maintenance of hair density post- treatment with oral finasteride. Thus, an attempt has been made in this Booklet to present the evidence base study report comprehensively along with relevant IMAGES and TABLES for better understanding. …Dr. H. K. Saboowala. This second of three related volumes, designed as a reference tool for the understanding and treatment of Androgenetic Alopecia and Female Pattern Hair Loss (AGA/FPHL), is structured in 4 sections: 63 dedicated chapters covering every aspect of medical (non-surgical, non-invasive) and nutritional treatment options and clinical effects. FDA-approved hair growth drugs, every frequently prescribed "off-label" or experimental drug, hormones, cosmeceuticals, and popular fraudulent controversial products are all presented in 26 chapters, with figures, tables, algorithms, and thousands of fully updated and balanced literature citations. Filling a gap in the latest literature, Androgenetic Alopecia From A to Z: Drugs, Herbs, Nutrition, and Supplements includes a thorough review of lifestyle and nutritional factors specifically affecting AGA/FPHL, including excessive caloric intake, high-fat diets, caloric deprivation, alcohol abuse, and smoking. The intricate effects of nutrition on hair loss, one of the most neglected and misunderstood fields in Dermatology, are presented as well, with a plethora of clinically valuable information: why food supplements are so popular, the regulatory minefield of supplements, and the life-threatening perils of nutritional supplementation, are all reviewed extensively. Each vitamin, major mineral, and trace element implicated in follicular physiology is reviewed in altogether 24 dedicated chapters according to their specific effects on the hair follicle, food sources, dietary recommendations, and the impact of deficiency or excess. This volume includes a comprehensive chapter on the understanding of Complementary-Alternative Medicine (CAM). CAM is an umbrella term for methods that lie outside evidence-based medicine and a part of a societal trend towards the rejection of science as a method of determining facts. The pitfalls and challenges in understanding botanicals with reported hair growth properties, from publication bias to lack of standardization, as well as their unpredictable pharmacological and physiological effects, are all explained in detail. Finally, all popular botanical products reported to possess hair growth properties are appraised in 14 dedicated chapters, each including a detailed review of the general effects, the suggested biochemical mechanisms, claimed actions on the hair follicle, all available studies, and hundreds of literature citations. This carefully crafted book will be an invaluable reference tool for dermatologists and all clinical practitioners dealing with Androgenetic Alopecia and Female Pattern Hair Loss and will help them answer challenging patient questions, debunk myths on hair growth drugs, and supplements and navigate patients towards effective and safe treatment schemes.

This book is open access and available on www.bloomsburycollections.com. It is funded by Knowledge Unlatched. The Medicamina Faciei Femineae is a didactic elegy that showcases an early example of Ovid's trademark combination of poetic instruction and trivial subject matter. Exploring female beauty and cosmeceuticals, with particular emphasis on the concept of cultus, the poem presents five practical recipes for treatments for Roman women. Covering both didactic parody and pharmacological reality, this deceptively complex poem possesses wit and vivacity and provides an important insight into Roman social mores and day-to-day activities. The first full study in English devoted to this little-researched but multi-faceted poem, Ovid on Cosmetics includes an introduction that situates the poem within its literary heritage of didactic and elegiac poetry, its place in Ovid's oeuvre and its relevance to social values, personal aesthetics and attitudes to female beauty in Roman society. The Latin text is presented on parallel pages alongside a new translation, and all Latin words and phrases are translated for the non-specialist reader. Detailed commentary notes elucidate the text and individual phrases still further. Ovid on Cosmetics presents and explicates this witty, subversive yet significant poem. Its attention to the technicalities of cosmeceuticals and cosmetics, including detailed analyses of individual ingredients and the effects of specific creams and makeup, make this work a significant contribution to the beauty industry in antiquity.

This book summarises the key clinical features and their treatment across a range of skin diseases and describes the decision-making process when referring patients to specialists. It describes how treatment of the skin is often very different to other specialities, as both topical and systemic medications are used, and reviews the clinical signs, investigation and diagnostic approaches to skin diseases. Treatment of Skin Diseases: A Practical Guide principally aids primary care physicians, trainee dermatologists and dermatology nurse practitioners, but it is also a convenient management guide for allied health professionals, students and hospital-based physicians. A concise atlas of diagnostic photographs is included and incorporated with a simple set of common differentials to provide a useful reference for primary care readers and those training in dermatology. The book also contains information on the management of common skin problems, together providing a comprehensive introduction to the treatment of skin diseases. The treatment options for secondary and tertiary care are also included to provide a thorough picture of the spectrum of dermatologic therapeutics.
