Tess Slesinger’s 1934 novel, The Unpossessed details the ins and outs and ups and downs of left-wing New York intellectual life and features a cast of litterateurs, layabouts, lotharios, academic activists, and fur-clad patrons of protest and the arts. This cutting comedy about hard times, bad jobs, lousy marriages, little magazines, high principles, and the morning after bears comparison with the best work of Dawn Powell and Mary McCarthy.

It's 1945 on Avalon, Santa Catalina Island, "The coast of Hollywood." Yachts and fishing boats bob in water clearer than crystal, sunbathers bask on the white sand beaches, and from the legendary Avalon Ballroom, the music of Freddy Martin's Orchestra fills the air. Three beautiful young women prepare to embark upon their life's journeys: Gerri will be an actress, everyone is sure of that; and Maria a big band singer; and Maggie, the most beautiful of them all, will "wed," not just marry, but triumphantly, resplendently wed--the perfect wife to the perfect man, leading the perfect life. Avalon follows their fortunes over four decades, their friendships enduring through triumph and heartbreak, as they learn about life, and themselves, and what love really is--and isn't. Sometimes wishes really do come true! "Avalon represents V. J. Banis at the top of his game: a terrific read, with characters you will remember long after you have turned the last page. Rating: three-hankies." --Ruth Sims, author of The Phoenix

The popularity of television in postwar suburban America had a devastating effect on the traditional Hollywood studio system. Yet many aging Hollywood stars used television to revive their fading careers. In Recycled Stars, Mary R. Desjardins examines the recirculation, ownership, and control of female film stars and their images in television, print, and new media. Female stardom, she argues, is central to understanding both the anxieties and the pleasures that these figures evoke in their audiences’ psyches through patterns of fame, decline, and return. From Gloria Swanson, Loretta Young, Ida Lupino, and Lucille Ball, who found new careers in early television, to Maureen O’Hara’s high-profile 1957 lawsuit against the scandal magazine Confidential, to the reappropriation of iconic star images by experimental filmmakers, video artists, and fans, this book explores the contours of female stars’ resilience as they struggled to create new contexts for their waning images across emerging media.

Postwar culture and anxiety over the reintegration of veterans into American society Millions of GIs returned from overseas in 1945. A generation of men who had left their families and had learned to kill and to quickly dispatch sexual urges were rapidly reintegrated into civilian life, told to put the war behind them with cheer and confidence. Many veterans struggled, openly or privately, with this transition. Others in society wondered what the war had wrought in them. As Erin Lee Mock shows in this insightful book, the “explosive” potential of men became a central concern of postwar American culture. This wariness of veterans settled into a generalized anxiety over men’s “inherent” violence and hypersexuality, which increasingly came to define masculinity. Changed Men engages with studies of film, media, literature, and gender and sexuality to advance a new perspective on the artistic and cultural output of and about the “Greatest Generation,” arguing that depictions of men’s violent and erotic potential emerged differently in different forms and genres but nonetheless permeated American culture in these years. Viewing this homecoming through the lenses of war and trauma, classical Hollywood, pulp fiction, periodical culture, and early television, Mock shows this history in a provocative new light.
