Excerpt from For the Liberty of Texas For the Liberty of Texas is a tale complete in itself, but it forms the first of a line of three volumes to be known under the general title of the Mexican War Series. Primarily the struggle of the Texans for freedom did not form a part of our war with Mexico, yet this struggle led up directly to the greater war to follow, and it is probably a fact that, had the people of Texas not at first accomplished their freedom, there would have been no war between the two larger republics. Excerpt from The Texan Star, the Story of a Great Fight for Liberty "The Texan Star," while a complete story in itself, is the first of three, projected by the author, and based upon the Texan struggle for liberty against the power of Mexico. This revolution, epic in its nature, and crowded with heroism and great events, divides itself naturally into three parts. The first phase begins in Mexico with the treacherous imprisonment of Austin, the Texan leader, the rise of Santa Anna and his attempt, through bad faith, to disarm the Texans and leave them powerless before the Indians. It culminates in the rebellion of the Texans, and their capture, in the face of great odds, of San Antonio, the seat of the Mexican power in the north. The second phase is the coming of Santa Anna with an overwhelming force, the fall of the Alamo, the massacre of Goliad and the dark days of Texas. Yet the period of gloom is relieved by the last stand of Crockett, Bowie, and their famous comrades. The third phase is the coming of light in the darkness, Houston's crowning victory at San Jacinto, and the complete victory of the Texans. The story of the Texan fight for freedom has always appealed to the author, as one of the most remarkable of modem times. Excerpt from The Texas Colonists and Religion, 1821-1836: A Centennial Tribute to the Texas Patriots Who Shed Their Blood That We Might Enjoy Civil and Religious Liberty I have taken for granted that those who will read this treatise have sufficient knowledge of the economic and political history of Texas from 1821 to 1836 to make 1t unnecessary for me to do more than merely allude to such facts by way of finding a setting for that which finally became the dominant factor of Texas colonial life, - the expres-sion or want of ex-q pression of religious experience. Excerpt from The Story of Liberty The necessity of teaching, not only to young Americans but to all prospective Americans, the meaning and mis sion of political liberty has but lately found expression in the movement known as Americanization. What is liberty as exemplified in American institutions? Where and how did it originate? Through what struggles and triumphs has it advanced? What peoples have always been its defenders, and how have its influence and bless ings been finally extended to include all nations of the earth? It is upon a knowledge of the facts implied in such questions as these that young American Citizens, whether native or foreign-born, are to become truly Americanized. Excerpt from Letter to the Hon. Henry Clay: On the Annexation of Texas to the United States I trust, that you will excuse the liberty which I take in thus publicly addressing you. If you could look into my heart, I am sure you would not condemn me. You would discover the motives of this act, in my respect for your eminent powers, and in my confidence that you are disposed to use them for the honor and happiness of your country. Were you less distinguished, or less worthy of distinction, I should not trouble you with this letter. I write you, because I am persuaded, that your great influ ence, if exerted in promoting just views on the subject of this communication, would accomplish a good, to which, perhaps, no other man in the country is equal. I am bound in frankness, to add another reason for addressing you. I h0pe that your name, prefixed to this letter, may secure to it an access to some, perhaps to many, who would turn away, were its thoughts presented in a more general form. Perhaps by this aid, it may scale the barrier, which now excludes from the South a certain class of the writings of the North. I am sure your hospitality would welcome me to Kentucky; and your well known generosity, I believe, will consent that I should use your name, to gain a hearing in that and the neighboring states. Excerpt from The Organization of the Texas Revolution Danger from this source could be understood by all, and gave no chance for division of opinion. Protective measures had to be adopted immediately; and no assist ance could be expected from the government, even had it been desired, Santa Anna being engaged at that time in the reduction of Zacatecas. The colonists were dependent upon themselves alone. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Sam Houston and the War of Independence in Texas The history of the War of Independence in Texas has been several times written. The most elaborate and valuable account is that of Henderson Yoakum, who had access to the original documents, and was familiar with many of the actors in the military and legislative history of the Republic of Texas. He is honest and accurate, and although later researches have corrected some errors, his volumes will remain the principal storehouse of information in regard to the events of the period. William Kennedy, a Scotchman and British consul at Galveston, preceded Yoakum, and his History of the Republic of Texas contains many original documents and much valuable information. Senator Henry G. Foote, of Mississippi, wrote his volumes on Texas and the Texans rather in the style of a controversial and oratorical pamphlet to favor annexation than a sober history, although they possess some value in the journals and accounts of participants in the events. Mr. H. H. Bancroft, with his customary industry and accuracy, has investi gated the history of Texas in American and Mexican sources, and published the results in his History of the North Mexican States and Texas. Rev. H. G. Thrall has given some useful statistical and other information in his Pictorial History of Texas. There are a considerable number of personal memoirs.
