This is the fascinating and inspirational story of the life and struggle of Dr. William M. Scholl. Born on a farm in Indiana, he worked his way through medical school in Chicago, and invented and brought to market, in the face of widespread scepticism, one of the most successful product lines in the field of health care. Against all the odds, strong opposition from the medical and chiropody fraternities, two World Wars, and the greatest economic depression of the twentieth century, he and his brother Frank, who brought the business from Chicago to England, Europe, Africa and the Antipodes, persevered and succeeded in establishing a worldwide organisation with six thousand employees. These two young men were blessed with an extraordinary degree of imagination and vision, and were many years ahead of their contemporaries both in terms of evangelical marketing and selling techniques on the one hand, and human and industrial relations on the other. This phenomenon was summarised by one of Dr. Scholl's managers in Latin America who exclaimed to him one day: Scholl is not a business, it is a religion - and you are the Pope. In 1979, when Scholl was taken over by a large multi-national pharmaceutical company it was financially sound, healthy and happy with six thousand employees worldwide. Sadly executives, who did not take the trouble to perceive how Scholl had become so successful, rushed in. This story contains lessons on many issues of successful and principled business practice for aspiring executives.

An orphan leaves Dark Ages London to study medicine in Persia in this “rich” and “vivid” historical novel from a New York Times–bestselling author (The New York Times). A child holds the hand of his dying mother and is terrified, aware something is taking her. Orphaned and given to an itinerant barber-surgeon, Rob Cole becomes a fast-talking swindler, peddling a worthless medicine. But as he matures, his strange gift—an acute sensitivity to impending death—never leaves him, and he yearns to become a healer. Arab madrassas are the only authentic medical schools, and he makes his perilous way to Persia. Christians are barred from Muslim schools, but claiming he is a Jew, he studies under the world’s most renowned physician, Avicenna. How the woman who is his great love struggles against her only rival—medicine—makes a riveting modern classic. The Physician is the first book in New York Times–bestselling author Noah Gordon’s Dr. Robert Cole trilogy, which continues with Shaman and concludes with Matters of Choice.
