Flash fiction is a type of storytelling that includes a limited number of words. Flash fiction is typically any story with fewer than 1,000 words, although flashes can sometimes be longer. The flashes in this volume are all under 1,500 words. Flash fiction can be a helpful method of improving English language skills once a student has reached a higher level (B1 or B2) in the language. The student understands the basics of the language and should have a decent vocabulary, but they are not yet fluent. Flash fiction, as opposed to novels or even novellas, are very short, self-contained stories. They include a minimal number of characters and often describe tiny moments rather than a larger story. There are simply fewer words and sentiments to miss in 1,000 words (a typical flash) as opposed to 80,000 words (a typical novel). Each flash in this volume includes words in bold that a B1 or B2 student may not be familiar with. Each word in bold is defined in a vocabulary list immediately following its flash. Each phrasal verb or idiom that is underlined is also described in the pages following its flash. Once the flash has been read and all its words understood, each has a series of exercises and comprehension questions meant to solidify the student’s understanding.

In Brevity, David Galef provides a guide to writing flash fiction, from tips on technique to samples by canonical and contemporary authors to provocative prompts that inspire powerful stories in a little space. Galef traces the genre back to its varied origins, from the short-short to nanofiction, with examples that include vignettes, prose poems, character sketches, fables, lists, twist stories, surrealism, and metafiction. The authors range from the famous, such as Colette and Borges, to today's voices, like Roxane Gay and Bruce Holland Rogers. A writer and longtime creative writing teacher, Galef also shows how flash fiction skills translate to other types of writing. Brevity is an indispensable resource for anyone working in this increasingly popular form.

From Scout Media comes A Flash of Words--the fifth volume in an ongoing short story anthology series featuring authors from all over the world, but the first in which the stories are exclusively flash-fiction pieces. In this installation, no limits were set on genre, allowing the authors to lead the reader to destinations unknown; from ghosts on a flight line, to not-so-cuddly poodles, to finding love in the most unexpected of places. Within these moments of retribution and redemption--along with a slightly confused bear--these flash-fiction length stories will warm your heart, send shivers down your spine, and tickle your funny bone. Whether to be enlightened, entertained, or momentarily immersed in another world, these selections convey the true spirit of flash fiction.
