"This report provides first-hand information on the trends and conditions in the commercial and recreational fisheries of the southeastern United States during 1991. The information and text were provided by Federal and State fishery reporting specialists that are located in major fishing ports in the region. The statements on trends and conditions in this report· are based on anecdotal information and do not necessarily represent analyzed data. The report also includes preliminary data on the commercial and recreational fishery landings for 1991. The Southeast Fisheries Science Center gratefully acknowledges the exemplary work of the fishery reporting specialists in collecting fishery statistics for conservation and management purposes. These individuals are the NMFS's liaison with rank-and-file fishermen and seafood dealers. Their willingness to work with the industry and their efforts in collecting the data necessary for a better understanding of the fishery are greatly appreciated"--Preface

"The Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFSC) is one of five regional fishery research centers of the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS). In 1970, the NMFS was organized as a component of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in the U.S. Department of Commerce. The Fisheries Science Centers provide scientific information required for decisions relating to the conservation and management of fishery resources, and the protection of fishery habitats, endangered and threatened species. In 1972, the NOAA Technical Memorandum series was established and the Southeast Fisheries Science Center began the publication of research reports. The purpose of this series is timely dissemination of the results of scientific research. The series also affords the SEFSC a means of publishing research results in greater depth and detail than is normally allowed by scientific journals, which usually have stringent length restrictions. To address the difficulties of identification and location of these publications, we present the following listing of SEFSC Technical Memoranda from number 1 (1972) to number 340 (1993). They are available from their originating laboratories or from the National Technical Information Service. A directory of these sources is provided on page 2"--Introduction

Living Marine Resources provides a thorough, up-to-date introduction to all aspects of fisheries science. This clearly written text offers insight into a topic of increasing importance--the wise utilization and management of sea fisheries to maximize production without exceeding their carrying capacity. Adoption of the approaches presented will improve the conservation and management of the many world fisheries that are suffering from years of inefficient practices. The book is divided into five sections, beginning with an introduction to the ocean environment and the various resource species. Part two examines fisheries biology, including age, growth, fecundity, and mortality, enabling readers to appreciate yield models designed to give estimates of maximum sustainable yield and maximum economic yield. The third part covers gear, methods, and landings and includes material on the handling and processing of seafood as well as aquaculture. In part four, yield models are presented to introduce students to theories on population dynamics, stock assessment, and management. The book concludes with coverage of recreational fisheries, including socioeconomic importance, catch and effort research, management techniques, and their interface with commercial fisheries. Living Marine Resources is an invaluable introduction to the subject for advanced undergraduate and graduate students of fisheries science. In addition, the material presented will be valuable to fishery and social scientists, fishery officers and administrators, and students in biology, engineering, economics, and law.
