Excerpt from First Lessons in War Every was brings in its course changes in tactics, of which the precise nature cannot be foreseen. This book was written in October 1914, before the accounts from the theatre of war had thrown much light on those changes of method of which we are now beginning to hear in some detail. The most important of them is the influence of artillery in compelling the infantry to be content with a much shorter field of fire in front of its trenches than is desirable for obtaining the full effect of the modern bullet. I think however that it is premature at present to modify the statements in my text as to the value of a clear field of fire, of which I suspect that the importance will reassert itself in the later stages of the war. Excerpt from The War and America, War Citizenship Lessons For our Schools the present crisis brings new opportunities and added responsibilities; Few of our high school students are old enough to fight for Uncle Sam at the front; but if all understand the need, very few indeed will Shirk any patriotic duty, however small, that arises. The first year of the war brought to our schools a new earnestness, a greater loyalty, a more complete consecration than we had ever known. Many of our failures have been due to ignorance, and inexperience, but we are learning. 'that we may learn faster, that we may learn better, that we help more, is our first need and our greatest desire. The primary purpose of these patriotic lessons is not informa tion but action. Since the schools are preeminently that branch of our social organization which works through information to knowledge, and through knowledge to character and potential efficiency, it is necessary that the lessons consider causes briefly and that they inquire a little into the nature of the problems to be considered. It is hoped that they may give some insight into war needs and help to develop a war conscience that is sensitive to personal Obligations. Their appeal is to the individual, to know the right way, and to avoid little blunders, Of which we are usually unconscious, which indirectly help the enemy. They aim to Show also that patriotism is more than a matter of individual compre hension; that it calls for cooperation of small groups such as classes and of large groups such as schools. Excerpt from "The War in Europe" And Its Lessons for Us: An Address While I have found receptive audiences all over the country, there is no community in which 'i would expect a more sym pathetic hearing than in this, because the distinguished gentle man who represents you\in Congress views the subject from the same standpoint that I do. Whenever a new question arises upon which the people have not expressed themselves, it is important that each individual should make known his views in order that public opinion may represent the voters generally and not a portion of the people only. The country would be fortunate if all of our public men were as candid and as courageous in taking a position as Congressman Bailey, who honors you as he is honored by you. In order that you may follow me the more easily, I shall outline in advance the address which I am to deliver to you. It naturally divides itself into three parts: first, the war as it is and its injury to neutrals; second, the false philosophy out of which the war has grown and the natural results of that false philosophy; and, third, the way out, or the road to permanent peace. The subject is presented with a view to emphasizing the lessons which this country can draw from the conflict beyond the ocean. Excerpt from The First Year of the War IT is scarcely necessary to state that the following pages have been written without any thing like literary ambition. They have been composed by the author, with but little aid, within the short period of three months, and in the midst of exacting occupations in the editorial department of a daily newspaper. These explanations are not made to disarm criticism. Their purpose is only to define the claim which the author's work makes at the bar of public criticism. He does not pretend to have written a brilliant or elaborate book; but he does claim to have composed, without seeking after literary ornaments, or taxing his style with intellectual refinements, a compact, faith ful, and independent popular narrative of the events of the first year of the existing war. Excerpt from A School History, of the Great War This brief history of the world's greatest war was prepared upon the suggestion of the National Board for Historical Service. Its purpose is to expand into an historical narrative the outline of the study of the war which the authors prepared for the Board and which was published by the United States Bureau of Education as Teachers' Leaflet No. 4, in August, 1918. The ar rangement of chapters and the choice of topics have been largely determined by the various headings in the outline for the course in grades seven and eight. The authors trust that the simple presentation here given may aid in developing a national comprehension of the issues involved in the war; and they hope it may play some part in preparing the American people for the solution of the great problems which lie immediately before us. Excerpt from The Next War, an Appeal to Common Sense The Last Shot. And these forecasts of the mili tary critics might stand now as histories of the great war. So it is possible to speak with some authority con cerning the character of that next war, especially since so many able Europeans have already recorded and analyzed the experiences and lessons of the first world war. Though we cannot do more than guess at the participants, we can foresee the methods of that struggle and its direct and indirect results on the lives and property, the souls and bodies, of the nations who find themselves involved. Excerpt from Winning a Cause, World War Stories Lest We Forget, the first volume of World War stories, gave an outline of the struggle up to the time of the signing of the armistice, November 1918, and contained in general, chronological order most of the stories that to children from ten to sixteen years of age would be' of greatest interest, and give the clearest understanding of the titanic contest. This, the second volume of the same series, contains the stories of the war of the character described, that were not included in Lest We Forget, stories of the United States naval heroes, of the Americans landed in France, of the concluding events of the war, of the visit of President Wilson to Europe, and of the Peace Conference. In a word, emphasis is placed upon America's part in the struggle. This volume should be of even greater interest to American children than the first, for it tells the story of America's greatest achievement, of a nation under taking a tremendous and terrible task not for material gain, but for an ideal.
