“A guide for planning that rich season of life, based not just on money, but also on how to create meaningful relationships, memories, and legacy.” —Dan Miller, author of 48 Days to the Work You Love Rock Retirement offers inspirational advice on how to enjoy the journey to retirement to its fullest. Traditional retirement advice usually boils down to saving more, sacrificing more, and settling for less. This approach makes people dependent on systems outside their control, such as the market, economy, and investment returns. The result: people lose power over determining their life. What sets Rock Retirement apart is its holistic approach to helping people take back control and act intentionally towards the life they want. It addresses the fears, hopes, and dreams that people have about retirement, goes way beyond the numbers, and shows them how to balance living well today and tomorrow. “Too many books think retirement is just about finances. Instead, retirement is about looking at life in full and working out what it is you want to do and then turning to finances to make it happen. That’s exactly the focus of the practical and helpful guide.” —Andrew Scott, coauthor of The 100-Year Life “Roger Whitney lays out a plan for today’s modern retiree. If you are exhausted with being fed that retirement is the end game of life, then Roger’s book is a must-read!” —Darryl W. Lyons, author of 18 to 80 “If you’re dreaming of a retirement free of worry, chao and confusion, Rock Retirement will give you the clarity, a solid plan and fresh inspiration to help you get where you want to go.” —Jevonnah “Lady J” Ellison, author of Love Letters for Leading Ladies

I was newly retired without a lot of hobbies or obligations, wondering how I would fare. Was I going to be a retired guy who watched a lot of daytime TV, took a lot of naps in the afternoon, gained weight, and settled into a long funk as I waited for the Reaper to make his inevitable call? Or would I make retirement a period of activity, fun, fulfillment, and happiness? You may have read retirement books or seen TV shows that feature handsome, smiling, and silver-haired people doing things like parasailing, mountain climbing, or taking romantic cruises during their golden years. You may wish to do such things yourself, and you should if you desire. But you can't do those things all the time. Even those smiling and handsome retirees must come home from their excursions for stretches of time and fill their days with something. For the first time in my life I kept a daily journal of my activities, experiences, and discoveries-what worked, what didn't, and what I learned along the way. This book describes my experiences and conclusions during my first year in retirement as I attempted to make a success of it. It also contains some perspectives that I developed over time, which I believe can improve one's retirement experience and outlook. I believe the suggestions I offer in this book apply to just about everyone regardless of job experience, wealth, or education.

2022 NATIONAL INDIE EXCELLENCE AWARDS FINALIST — SOCIAL/POLITICAL CHANGE • 2022 ASJA ANNUAL WRITING AWARD WINNER — SERVICE • 2022 NAUTILUS BOOK AWARDS GOLD MEDALIST — SOCIAL CHANGE & SOCIAL JUSTICE • 2022 AXIOM BUSINESS BOOK AWARD GOLD MEDALIST — PHILANTHROPY/NONPROFIT/SUSTAINABILITY How do we vote with our dollars, not just to make ourselves feel good, but to make a real difference? Wallet Activism challenges you to rethink your financial power so can feel confident spending, earning, and saving money in ways that align with your values. While we call the American system a democracy, capitalism is the far more powerful force in our lives. The greatest power we have—especially when political leaders won’t move quickly enough—is how we use our money: where we shop, what we buy, where we live, what institutions we entrust with our money, who we work for, and where we donate determines the trajectory of our society and our planet. While our votes and voices are essential, too, Wallet Activism helps you use your money for real impact. It can feel overwhelming to determine “the right way” to spend: a choice that might seem beneficial to the environment may have unintended consequences that hurt people. And marketers are constantly lying to you, making it hard to know what choice is best. Wallet Activism empowers us to vote with our wallets by making sense of all the information coming at us, and teaching us to cultivate a more holistic mindset that considers the complex, interrelated ecosystems of people and the planet together, not as opposing forces. From Tanja Hester, Our Next Life blogger and author of Work Optional, comes the mindset-shifting guide to help you put your money where your values are. Wallet Activism is not a list of dos and don’ts that will soon become outdated, nor does it call for anti-consumerist perfection. Instead, it goes beyond simple purchasing decisions to explore: The impacts a financial decision can have across society and the environment How to create a personal spending philosophy based on your values Practical questions to quickly assess the “goodness” of a product or an entity you may buy from The ethics of earning money, choosing what foods to eat, employing others, investing responsibly, choosing where to live, and giving money away For anyone interested in leaving the world better than you found it, Wallet Activism helps you build habits that will make your money matter.

Having retired early in life at the age of 45, back in the late 80's, has been very advantages to me. It gave me the time to devote many thousands of hours to this project and it should be very beneficial to you, as a reader. This book illustrates what has worked very profitably for me in the past and continues to work profitably to this day. In this book, there are valuable tips and some good sound financial and fundamental information. As President of three Corporations and three companies, from 1965 to present day, it has kept me quite busy over time. In the 90's, as Owner, Producer, Director, and Host of a popular Radio Travel Show in southwest Florida, I was quite content. At the time, I felt I had done quite a bit in my life, but I also felt one project was missing. I had been asked many times, how I retired so young, and how I achieved my success in life. So one day in 2004, I said to myself why not sit down and write about it, hence this book. I do say at times, I am really in semi-retirement, very busy having fun. This book was written with good intentions, morals, and family values. As you read on, it is for all to enjoy, from ages 9 to 90. Early Retirement: A Road Map to Success is a timeless book.
