Excerpt from First Book of Qualitative Chemistry for Studies of Water Solution and Mass Action In this edition, as in the One first issued, the Object is not so much analysis as it is chemistry; not detective method for its own sake so much as it is a personal acquaintance with the character Of the chemical elements and with the nature Of chemical change. A suitable course in qualitative chemistry is found to be a favorable avenue by which to approach the vantage grounds Of the science. An outline of the Periodic System, or Of some part Of it, is kept in view Of the student while he is led to trace the gradation in the reactions Of the several elements, and thereby to define the different analytical groups. Some care has been bestowed, in this edition, as in that Of 1879, upon statements of. The composition Of articles in use in daily life under current popular names. This is done in connection with analytical work bearing directly upon the articles so designated, and providing for their analysis. The qualitative student is proverbially curious as to the composition of materials in common use and this interest is. Available in laboratory teaching. Excerpt from A Manual of Qualitative Chemical Analysis An examination of most of the works on the subject of qualitative analysis will show that they belong in one of two general classes which may be described as follows: first, the exhaustive treatise, of which such a work as that of Fresenius will serve as an example; second, the abbreviated treatise, often very much abbreviated, in which the author attempts to cover the whole work in a few lessons. For graduate students, or for the better class of beginners who are able to devote the most of their time to the study, books of the first class may be invaluable. But the great majority of the students in our colleges do not become chemists. They study analytical chemistry at the most but a short time, and what they acquire is, and should be, to a considerable extent, of disciplinary value to them. To the great majority of our students, therefore, the exhaustive treatise, especially at the beginning of their course, is a means of confusion rather than an intelligent guide. The second class of text-books is also likely to fail with the average student, since it teaches him to analyze an unknown substance in such a purely mechanical way that the actual knowledge of the subject acquired is small, and the disciplinary value of the work becomes a minimum. Excerpt from Practical Chemistry: The Principles of Qualitative Analysis The second part is devoted to methods of Analysis. Here he is first instructed in the properties of a few of the constituents of common salts, and is taught methods for their separation or identification in presence of one another. If he goes no further than this he will at least have learnt what chemical analysis means. He afterwards proceeds to extend his knowledge, till at the end of the course he will be able to analyse any mixture of ordinary inorganic substances. The analytical part is to a great extent shorn of directions for manipulation, as well as of details which are not relevant to the immediate object of the experiment. According to my experience these are not only of no use, but are a positive hindrance to the apprehension of the facts to be acquired. Manipulation can only be learnt properly under personal instruction by a competent teacher, and more will be accomplished by letting the beginner see once for all how a thing is to be done than by whole volumes of printed directions. Excerpt from Instruction in Chemical Analysis (Qualitative) The rapid sale of the first English Edition of this Work has justified the anticipation of the illustrious Chemist, at whose suggestion I undertook to place it at the service of the English student of chemistry. The numerous commendations it received from the press, I may be allowed to say, in my capacity of Editor, it fully deserves. The present edition is almost a new work, so numerous and important are the additions and alterations which are so incorporated into its structure that they could not be pro duced separately. It represents the fourth German edition. Several new works on the same subject, of various pretensions, have made their appearance in this country since this was published - they have not retarded, on the contrary they seem rather to have facilitated its sale. Excerpt from The Elements of Qualitative Analysis Two reasons have led to the writing of this book. One has been the desire to give to my classes a scheme for quali tative analysis in which points where a beginner is liable to make mistakes are especially guarded by careful and explicit directions for procedure. In this respect the book is the result of considerable experience with classes in the labora tory, where especial pains have been taken to discover the reasons for errors on the part of ordinary students. Quali tative analysis is of no value unless it leads to certain results, and the beginner needs to have it impressed upon his mind that certainty can only be attained by performing each operation in exactly the right way. In the author's opinion it is better to teach the student the right way at first, rather than to give only an outline and expect him to fill in the details of manipulation for himself. Every one who has had experience in the matter knows, however, that no amount of careful direction in a text-book can supply the place of constant watchfulness on the part of the instructor. Excerpt from The Elements of Qualitative Chemical Analysis, Vol. 1: With Special Consideration of the Application of the Laws of Equilibrium and of the Modern Theories of Solution IN venturing to add another book on Qualitative Chemical Analysis to the long list of publications on this subject, the author has been moved chiefly by the often expressed wish of students and friends to have his lectures on qualitative analysis rendered available for reference and for a wider circle of instruction. Parts I and II of the present book embody these lectures in the form to which they have developed in the course of the last six teen years, since, 'in 1894, the teaching of analytical chemistry, along the lines followed, was first suggested by Ostwald's pioneer Wissenschaftliche Grundlagen der Analytischen Chemie. Excerpt from Qualitative Chemical Analysis and Laboratory Practice Part II. Treats of Qualitative Analysis; it is divided into five sections. In the first section the general preliminary operations of testing are described, such as the employment of flame reactions, the use of the Bunsen flame, the spectroscope, and so forth. The second section treats of systematic qualitative testing. The wet and dry reactions of each of the more commonly occurring bases and acids, inorganic and organic, are first described, after which a synopsis of analytical methods is given. The third section gives the special tests for the rarer elements, and shows where they may be expected, and how they may be separated, in the ordinary course of analysis. The fourth and fifth sections have been added mainly for the use of medical students. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Treatise on Practical Chemistry and Qualitative Analysis: Adapted for Use in the Laboratories of Colleges and Schools Symbolic notation has been employed throughout the Sections on analytical chemistry. In its most concise form, this chemical shorthand conduces so much to brevity in writing down results, that no other plea is required for its use. The simple plan of entering upon the label of each bottle in the laboratory not only the chemical name but also the chemical formula of its contents, will prevent the general use of chemical formula from causing perplexity to beginners. A reference to the lists of chemicals in Section VII. Will also furnish the formula which corresponds to the name of any substance. It has, however, been thought well to insert the chemical name of each substance together with its formula, when the substance is first referred to in the text. Excerpt from An Elementary Manual of Qualitative Chemical Analysis Of the fluid, bu sometimes it passes off in the form of a gas, as ammonia, etc. Precipitation is often accelerated by heating the fluid, or by agitation. The precipitate is separated from the fluid by filtration. A disk of unsized paper is folded into a conical form, and placed in a funnel supported on a stand. The paper is first moistened with a little distilled water, and the mix ture poured upon it the clear fluid passes into the ves sel set below, while the precipitate remains on the paper. To free the precipitate from all soluble impurities, it is washed by pouring distilled water over it, until a drop from the point of the funnel leaves no residue upon pla tinum foil.
