Abstract: The nontrivial topological structure of the QCD gauge vacuum generates a CP breaking term in the QCD Lagrangian. However, measurements of the neutron electric dipole moment have demonstrated that the term's coefficient is unnaturally small, a dilemma known as the strong CP problem. A massless up quark is one potential solution, as the term could then be absorbed through chiral rotations. Through the light-quark-mass ratio m%5Fu / m%5Fd, leading order Chiral Perturbation Theory appears to rule this scenario out. However, the Kaplan-Manohar ambiguity demonstrates that certain strong next-to-leading order corrections are indistinguishable from an up quark mass. Only a direct calculation of the Gasser-Leutwyler coefficient combination 2 L%5F8 - L%5F5 can resolve the issue. We carry out such a calculation, using partially quenched N%5Ff = 3 staggered fermions and hypercubic blocking, and make a quantitative assessment of our systematic error. We find 2 L%5F8 - L%5F5 = (0.22 +/- 0.14) x 10[carat]-3, which corresponds to a light-quark-mass ratio of m%5Fu / m%5Fd = 0.408 +/- 0.035. Thus, the massless-up-quark solution to the strong CP problem is ruled out. This is the first calculation of its type to use a physical number of light quarks, N%5Ff = 3, and the first determination of 2 L%5F8 - L%5F5 to include a comprehensive study of statistical error.

It is commonly believed that in confining vector-like gauge theories the center and chiral symmetry realizations are parametrically entangled, and if phase transitions occur, they must take place around the strong scale?−1 of the gauge theory. We demonstrate that (non-thermal) vector-like theories formulated on R3 x S1 where S1 is a spatial circle exhibit new dynamical scales and new phenomena. There are chiral phase transitions taking place at?−1/N{sub c} in the absence of any change in center symmetry.?−1/N{sub c}, invisible in (planar) perturbation theory, is also the scale where abelian versus non-abelian confinement regimes meet. Large N{sub c} volume independence (a working Eguchi-Kawai reduction) provides new insights and independently confirms the existence of these scales. We show that certain phases and scales are outside the reach of holographic (supergravity) modeling of QCD.

This first open access volume of the handbook series contains articles on the standard model of particle physics, both from the theoretical and experimental perspective. It also covers related topics, such as heavy-ion physics, neutrino physics and searches for new physics beyond the standard model. A joint CERN-Springer initiative, the "Particle Physics Reference Library" provides revised and updated contributions based on previously published material in the well-known Landolt-Boernstein series on particle physics, accelerators and detectors (volumes 21A, B1,B2,C), which took stock of the field approximately one decade ago. Central to this new initiative is publication under full open access
