Excerpt from Finding List of Books Common to the Branches of the Public Library of the City of Boston: September, 1902 With few exceptions the titles in this list may be found at all the Branches except that at West Roxbury. Previous issues of the Branch Finding List have contained only the accessions since June 1, 1897; this issue includes all the important titles which are common to the Branches. It should be understood, however, that the Branch collections are still far from being uniform or adequate in certain classes, and that this list is in no sense an ideal one. Books are entered here according to classes, and under the author's name only, except in the following divisions: Individual Biography, where the subject precedes the author; Fiction, where each book is entered under title as well as author; Books for Younger Readers, where a separate list by titles has been added to the author list. Suggestions For Use Of The Finding List. A close attention to the scheme of classification is recommended. To find a given book, look under the author's name, in the proper class or division; for example Fiske: The American Revolution will be found under Fiske, in the division allotted to United States history. Under Fiction and Books for Younger Readers a book may be looked for by title also. If you do not find a book readily, consider whether you may not be looking under the wrong division, as, for example, in Natural Science, when the book is entered under Useful and Industrial Arts, or in the general division, History, when the book is, perhaps, Juvenile History. Use also the author index at the end of the List to find on what pages an author's name appears. This index does not, however, include authors of fiction or of books for younger readers. If you know only the title of a book, it will be necessary to look through the titles under the proper division until you find the one you want, except in the important classes of Fiction and Books for Younger Readers. In the card catalogues of the Branches, however, you may find a book at once by its title. It is obvious that all the books which the Branches contain upon a given subject may be easily found by looking under the proper class or classes.
