Excerpt from Fifty-Ninth Annual Report of the Hawaiian Mission Children's Society, 1911: With the Charter and by-Laws and List of Active Members The members were led in prayer by Dr. John T. Gulick, and united with Mrs. E. A. Weaver in singing, Blest Be the Tie That Binds. The young ladies' glee club of Oahu College, with Miss Smith as leader, sang a lullaby, soft, harmonious and dreamful, followed by a Dutch lullaby, so rollicking it might well set the winds and dream fairies dancing among the sails of Holland. The minutes of the Board of Managers were read and Dr. Emer son moved that the recommendations of the Board be accepted, bar ring the item referring to the size of the Annual Report. After some explanations Dr. Emerson withdrew his motion and G. R. Carter moved the adoption of the entire report. Mrs. Theodore Richards, chairman of the literary program, read a synopsis of the Thaddeus journal from the time of reaching Hawaii to the time of landing at Kailua, prepared by A. C. Alexander, and continued the journal in full through the dates of April 1, 2, 3. She was, however, interrupted by Dr. Clark, who wanted ample time for business, first. Dr. Emerson hoped the original spelling of Hawaiian names, as given in the journal, might be preserved. The Treasurer's report was received, accepted, and placed on file. Excerpt from Fifty-Seventh Annual Report of the Hawaiian Mission Children's Society, 1909: With the Charter and by-Laws and List of Active Members The year has been one of general unrest, of history-making and advance. One of the most appalling disasters ever recorded occurred on Dec. 28, when Italy and Sicily were visited by the most destruct ive earthquake of the centuries. Political disturbances have been many. Ancient Persia is awak ing and India calls for more freedom. Austria, Crete and Bulgaria, on the point of involving greater nations in war, were surprised when Turkey, the unchangeable, issued a proclamation of personal liberty to her subjects, religious toleration and freedom of speech. Russia, at her third Duma, inaugurated many reforms; Portugal, although King Carlos and the crown-prince were assassinated, has moved steadily forward; China's Emperor and Dowager Empress are dead, yet no uprising followed and reforms continue, the anti 0pium law making rapid progress; war between France and Ger many has been prevented by an agreement in November to arbi trate; Japan has sealed her friendship with the United States by a treaty; The Hague conference was followed by peace meetingsin many lands; the American fleet sailed on a mission of peace around the world and was received with eclat by the nations; a wave of prohibition has swept over this nation and five states have enacted prohibitory laws; graft has been exposed and punished; 2-cent postage has been inaugurated between the United States, Great Britain and Germany; the problem of aerial flight has been solved; wireless telegraphy has greatly advanced; color photog raphy has been evolved; moving pictures and a signal system on railroads by which broken rails can be detected in time to prevent a wreck - these are among the many changes. Excerpt from The Seventieth Annual Report of the Hawaiian Mission Children's Society, 1922: With the Charter and by-Laws and the Names and Addresses of Active Members Mother Clark, to me the dearest and sweetest of all the mothers, was my own precious mother. I will not try to describe her, but never did a large family of children, have a more loving, impartial, devoted mother, who grew lovelier and dearer to them as the years passed, and they appreciated more and more her true worth. She was an earnest worker for Hawaiian women, and full of good cheer and helpfulness to all about her. I remember hearing a gentleman of the mission, after a quiet talk with her on mission matters, remark how helpful the opinion of the sisters of the mission was to the brothers. I have only given a few of my early recollections of mission moth ers, and not told of the good helpmeets they were to their busy hus bands, nor of the various forms of missionary work in which they were themselves engaged.
