Excerpt from Elements of Field Hygiene and Sanitation One of the important subjects with which newly commissioned officers must acquaint themselves is the care of troops. Disease has killed more soldiers than powder and shot, and has occasioned the defeat of many armies. But when so much other military knowledge must be acquired, a description of how troops are kept healthy should be brief. This booklet, therefore, considers only those points that are of proven value. Many illustrations are employed in order to give clear ideas of the sanitary apparatus used in different armies and to abbreviate the text. The diagrams after Havard, Lelean, Tournade, Lewis and Miller, Peck and Trinca, are reproduced by courtesy of Wm. Wood and Company, Messrs J.A. Churchill, M. Fournier, the Military Surgeon and the British Medical Journal respectively. The first mentioned have also kindly permitted the usage of Havards text descriptive of the figure reproduced.
