It’s fatal making a fuss ... . -Jean Rhys, Quartet. Cathleen Maslen’s Ferocious Things: Jean Rhys and the Politics of Women’s Melancholia closely engages with the most obvious theme of Rhys’s writing: the speaking and inscription of feminine anguish. Maslen resists easy generalisations with respect to Rhys’s portrayal of women’s psychic pain, attending carefully to the nuances of sexual, cultural and ethnic displacement which inform the suffering of Rhys’s protagonists. Acknowledging the many fine recent critical engagements with Rhys’s unique corpus of novels, Maslen insists that Rhys’s particular articulation of women’s pain presents a significant literary transgression, defying the intractable cultural interdiction against women ‘making a fuss.’ At the same time, this book engages with the problematic privileging of melancholic and nostalgic discourse in the Western canon in general. Rhys’s work, Maslen argues, simultaneously celebrates and resists fundamentally Eurocentric and anti-feminist paradigms of melancholia and nostalgia. In short, the ferocious melancholia of Jean Rhys’s female voices poses constructive paradoxes and points of departure for feminist and post-colonial debates in the 21st century.

This debut story collection from the Tobias Wolff Award–winning author “is streaked with fantasy that deconstructs society’s lost and wasted lives” (Publishers Weekly). In these eight darkly comic stories, acclaimed author Tom Howard explores the conflicting instincts for tenderness and violence that mark his character’s lives. A brother and sister wander the pier after a deadly plague destroys most of humanity. A high school bully struggles to overcome his demons. A man in the grips of dementia is visited by his children’s ghosts. The people in these tales grapple with past mistakes, trying to navigate their way toward redemption and resurrection. Though they often fail, they strive with ferocious hearts as their voices guide us through schoolyards, cemeteries, drive-in theaters, and the rich landscapes of their own imaginations.

G. K. Chesterton is one of the first popular writers to object to culture's casual dismissal of the divine. In "The Everlasting Man" he restores God to our understanding of history. "The Everlasting Man" is one of G. K. Chesterton's most important books. Frustrated with attempts to relate history without God, such as H. G. Wells' "Outline of History," "The Everlasting Man" is Chesterton's view of history, presented in two parts: "On the Creature Called Man," and "On the Man Called Christ." He argues that the central character in history is Christ, and that no explanation other than the Christian one makes sense. Chesterton was one of the spiritual influences on C. S. Lewis, and this book in particular was a key factor in Lewis' conversion to Christianity. Readers who appreciate the writings of Lewis will want to explore the writings of those who influenced him, including Chesterton. "The Everlasting Man" is now available from Hendrickson in a re-typeset and redesigned version.
