Download Report of the International Workshop on the Implementation of International Fisheries Instruments and Factors of Unsustainability and Overexploitation in Fisheries Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
The workshop referred closely to the results of a first workshop held in Bangkok in 2002 (The International Workshop on Factors Contributing to Unsustainability and Overexploitation in Fisheries) but aimed more specifically at answering the following three major questions: What are the major obstacles to the implementation of major legal instruments? What are the main lessons learned and the possible paths to solutions for improved implementation? What are the possible gaps that may exist in these instruments to guide the international community in improving the management of marine fisheries? The workshop was based on a review of eleven case studies, each relating to one of the following categories of fishery: large volume small pelagics; tuna and tuna-like species; large volume demersals; and coastal fisheries. This publication contains the report of the Workshop, discussion papers containing case studies and notes submitted by participants. The document, and in particular the conclusions adopted by workshop participants, will serve as a basis for further analytical work aimed at improved fisheries management and a more effective implementation of major international fisheries instruments.

Download Sampling Rare or Elusive Species Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Information regarding population status and abundance of rare species plays a key role in resource management decisions. Ideally, data should be collected using statistically sound sampling methods, but by their very nature, rare or elusive species pose a difficult sampling challenge. Sampling Rare or Elusive Species describes the latest sampling designs and survey methods for reliably estimating occupancy, abundance, and other population parameters of rare, elusive, or otherwise hard-to-detect plants and animals. It offers a mixture of theory and application, with actual examples from terrestrial, aquatic, and marine habitats around the world. Sampling Rare or Elusive Species is the first volume devoted entirely to this topic and provides natural resource professionals with a suite of innovative approaches to gathering population status and trend data. It represents an invaluable reference for natural resource professionals around the world, including fish and wildlife biologists, ecologists, biometricians, natural resource managers, and all others whose work or research involves rare or elusive species.

The Consultation made a thorough review of management approaches employed in the small-scale fisheries in the region and found that government institutional arrangements/management were prevalent compared with traditional and co-management systems. However, most countries operate all three in various combinations and under varying circumstances. In view of the analysis of the experiences with regard to procedure, achievements, constraints and lessons learned, co-management emerged as a viable option for the present, and should be pursued into the future.

Download The Northwest Fisheries Science Center's West Coast Groundfish Bottom Trawl Survey Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Information on the abundance and distribution of most Pacific Coast groundfish is obtained principally by bottom trawl surveys. The annual bottom trawl survey in this region is conducted by the NMFS Northwest Fisheries Science Center from four chartered fishing vessels that each conduct over 150 trawls during early summer to early autumn, and cover trawlable habitats from the U.S.--Canada to the U.S.--Mexico borders, at depths of 55 m to 1,280 m. This document covers the history of this survey, including descriptions of predecessor surveys in the region, statistical design, and survey protocols.
