The F.D.N.Y. is the United States’ largest and most storied fire department. Filled with full-color photographs of firefighting equipment, memorabilia, and notable fires, F.D.N.Y. tells the story of the New York City Fire Department from the Colonial era through 2001 attack on the World Trade Center to today. Based on the unparalleled collection of the New York City Fire Museum, F.D.N.Y. documents the New York’s “Bravest” as they have fought fires, including the Great Fire of 1835 and the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire, in a challenging and constantly changing city. For the 150th anniversary of the department’s founding, the second edition of F.D.N.Y. adds 16 pages on the department’s improvements since 9/11. Packed with photos showing how firefighters are dealing with 21st century threats such as the continuing challenge of terrorism, the 2003 Blackout, and Hurricane Sandy.

For many African Americans, getting a public sector job has historically been one of the few paths to the financial stability of the middle class, and in New York City, few such jobs were as sought-after as positions in the fire department (FDNY). For over a century, generations of Black New Yorkers have fought to gain access to and equal opportunity within the FDNY. Tracing this struggle for jobs and justice from 1898 to the present, David Goldberg details the ways each generation of firefighters confronted overt and institutionalized racism. An important chapter in the histories of both Black social movements and independent workplace organizing, this book demonstrates how Black firefighters in New York helped to create affirmative action from the "bottom up," while simultaneously revealing how white resistance to these efforts shaped white working-class conservatism and myths of American meritocracy. Full of colorful characters and rousing stories drawn from oral histories, discrimination suits, and the archives of the Vulcan Society (the fraternal society of Black firefighters in New York), this book sheds new light on the impact of Black firefighters in the fight for civil rights.

The book provides a systematic view on flammability and a collection of solved engineering problems in the fields of dilution and purge, mine gas safety, clean burning safety and gas suppression modeling. For the first time, fundamental principles of energy conservation are used to develop theoretical flammability diagrams and are then explored to understand various safety-related mixing problems. This provides the basis for a fully-analytical solution to any flammability problem. Instead of the traditional view that flammability is a fundamental material property, here flammability is discovered to be a result of the explosibility of air and the ignitability of fuel, or a process property. By exploring the more fundamental concepts of explosibility and ignitability, the safety targets of dilution and purge can be better defined and utilized for guiding safe operations in process safety. This book provides various engineering approaches to mixture flammability, benefiting not only the safety students, but also field operators, as a useful resource for the safe handling of flammable gases and liquids. It will be useful to anyone who worries about the ignition potential of a flammable mixture.

Nothing stirs the blood like the flashing lights and blaring siren of a fire truck racing to fight a blaze. The action photography in this book captures that excitement in all of its forms. In powerful, on-the-scene pictures and text, author/photographer Shapiro explores the special techniques and equipment brought to bear on fires in cities and suburbs, rural outposts and wilderness, in homes and industrial structures. He also takes a close look at hair-raising rescues and other “non-firefighting” tasks that firefighters find themselves facing. From bold photography and detailed descriptions of fire fighting to close-up looks at the fire house and its full array of equipment--trucks, ladders, pumpers, and tankers--this book conveys both the technical nitty-gritty and the fiery action of meeting and containing one of nature’s most brutal forces.

The sixth edition of Introduction to Fire Protection and Emergency Services meets and exceeds the National Fire Academy's Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE) course objectives and outcomes for the Associate's (Core) course called Principles of Emergency Services (C0273). The Sixth Edition delivers future fire service candidates a head start in the competitive selection process by familiarizing students with the selection and training process. In addition, the Sixth Edition provides a comprehensive and concise overview of the broad spectrum of the fire service, from the primary duties of the modern fire department, to emergency incident management, to fire prevention, to department administration. The Sixth Edition reinforces foundational knowledge, including the history and future of the fire service; the chemistry and physics of fire; issues facing the fire and rescue service in the United States; and careers in the fire and emergency services. The entire range of services of the modern fire service is explored, including emergency medical services, hazardous materials response, wildland fires, swiftwater rescue, and urban search and rescue. The Sixth Edition includes: An emphasis on safety and professionalism, which is reinforced through discussions of incident effectiveness, fire fighter ethics, customer service, physical fitness, training, decision making, fire prevention, and behavioral health Organizations that support the fire service are highlighted, including: Firefighter Behavioral Health Alliance. Firefighter Cancer Support Network. Leary Firefighter Foundation Discussions on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Repeated Exposure to Trauma (RET) and their effects on fire fighters An expanded discussion of the possible future effects of climate change and the effect on the fire and rescue service

What does it take to lead people into a burning building? How do the leaders of the New York City Fire Department develop so much loyalty, trust, and grace under pressure that their subordinates will risk their very lives for them? As a high-ranking officer of the FDNY, John Salka is an expert at both practicing and teaching high-stakes leadership. In First In, Last Out, he explains the department’s unique strategies and how they can be adopted by leaders in any field—as he has taught them to organizations around the country. In a tough-talking, no-nonsense style, Salka uses real-world stories to convey leadership imperatives such as: first in, last out—your people need to see you taking the biggest risk, as the first one to enter the danger zone and the last to leave manage change—the fire you fought yesterday is not the one you’ll be fighting tomorrow communicate aggressively—a working radio is worth more than 20,000 gallons of water create an execution culture—focus your people on the flames, not the smoke commit to reality—never allow the way you would like things to be to color how things are develop your people—let them feel a little heat today or they’ll get burned tomorrow Illustrated by harrowing real-life situations, the principles in First In, Last Out will help managers become more confident, coherent, and commanding.
