The last years of research and development in the automotive industry were still focused on designing electrical propulsion units to be eco-friendly and diminish the drawbacks of classical combustion engines. Besides being energy efficient, silent, and high in power density, these must have a serious fault-tolerant ability as driver, and passengers' safety is probably the most important issue in this filed. The chapter will detail fault-tolerant machines and power electronic architectures with their control for the most common ones, such as switched reluctance machines (SRM) and the permanent-magnet synchronous machines (PMSM). Besides detection, solutions will be presented for the machine-drive unit to wisely overcome and compensate occurred faults. A novel modular structure of SRM is presented with increased fault tolerance and possibility of fast repair in case of any machine damage. The solutions will be validated via simulated and experiment-based results.

With the growing interest in electrical machines in recent times, the multiphase machine field has developed into a fascinating research area. Their intrinsic features (power splitting, better fault tolerance, or lower torque ripple) make them an appealing competitor to conventional three-phase machines. Multiphase electric drives have been recently used in applications where fault tolerance and continuous operation of the drive are required. However, the difficulties in extending the three-phase conventional current regulation and control structure to multiphase systems still limit their broad applicability in industry solutions. The main objective of this book is to illustrate new advances, developments, and applications in the field of multiphase machines and drives, while exposing these advances, developments, and applications to the scientific community and industry.

Fault Diagnosis, Prognosis, and Reliability for Electrical Machines and Drives An insightful treatment of present and emerging technologies in fault diagnosis and failure prognosis In Fault Diagnosis, Prognosis, and Reliability for Electrical Machines and Drives, a team of distinguished researchers delivers a comprehensive exploration of current and emerging approaches to fault diagnosis and failure prognosis of electrical machines and drives. The authors begin with foundational background, describing the physics of failure, the motor and drive designs and components that affect failure and signals, signal processing, and analysis. The book then moves on to describe the features of these signals and the methods commonly used to extract these features to diagnose the health of a motor or drive, as well as the methods used to identify the state of health and differentiate between possible faults or their severity. Fault Diagnosis, Prognosis, and Reliability for Electrical Machines and Drives discusses the tools used to recognize trends towards failure and the estimation of remaining useful life. It addresses the relationships between fault diagnosis, failure prognosis, and fault mitigation. The book also provides: A thorough introduction to the modes of failure, how early failure precursors manifest themselves in signals, and how features extracted from these signals are processed A comprehensive exploration of the fault diagnosis, the results of characterization, and how they used to predict the time of failure and the confidence interval associated with it A focus on medium-sized drives, including induction, permanent magnet AC, reluctance, and new machine and drive types Perfect for researchers and students who wish to study or practice in the rea of electrical machines and drives, Fault Diagnosis, Prognosis, and Reliability for Electrical Machines and Drives is also an indispensable resource for researchers with a background in signal processing or statistics.

The need for efficiency, reliability and continuous operation has lead over the years to the development of fault-tolerant electrical drives for various industrial purposes and for transport applications. Permanent-magnet synchronous machines have also been gaining interest due to their high torque-to-mass ratio and high efficiency, which make them a very good candidate to reduce the weight and volume of the equipment. In this work, a multidisciplinary approach for the design of fault-tolerant permanent-magnet synchronous machine drives is presented. The first chapter introduces the electrical drive and its components. An analysis of the failures and key elements to quantify the reliability are given. A general drive model for multi-phase machines is described in chapter 2, whereas the control aspects are addressed in chapter 3. Chapter 4 is dedicated to fault detection and isolation, which is the basis used for fault-tolerant control (chapter 5). Some design considerations are exposed in the sixth chapter. Finally, conclusions and future works are proposed in the last chapter of this treatise.

Under the conditions of increased consumption of energy resources, the problem of their conservation and rational use is topical. About 50-70 % of all energy produced in the world is consumed by the electric drive. However, its operation is often accompanied by the appearance of various kinds of defects and damage caused by poor-quality manufacturing or repair, failure of individual elements of electric motors without loss of performance. It results in more energy consumption and premature repair of electrical equipment, and hence in an increase in material costs and enlarged use of energy resources. To eliminate the negative consequences of the operation of an electric drive with defects and damage to induction motors, the monograph presents methods and systems of fault-tolerant control that allow the adjustment of the operating modes using the means of a variable-frequency electric drive. The main idea of such systems is to maintain the operability of technological mechanisms in the event of various malfunctions. The worked out methods and systems make it possible to detect various types of damage at the initial stages of their development. Then, based on the obtained information, they allow upgrading the control algorithm to maintain the operable state of the electromechanical equipment to the possibility of replacing the corresponding equipment or repairing the electric drive motor. That is, the most rational area for using the developed fault-tolerant control systems is industrial equipment, which must continue to operate, despite the deterioration in dynamic characteristics and energy efficiency.
