The Fatal Accident Reporting System (FARS) gathers data on the most severe traffic accidents that occur each year--those that result in loss of human life. It supplies the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) with information that is invaluable to its mission of reducing the number of traffic accidents and the losses that result from them. Data for 1983 show that 42,584 men, women and children died in motor vehicle traffic accidents. This is a 3.1 percent decline from the 1982 death toll and a 16.7 percent decline from the 1980 death toll.
