In some cases, terraces may also shorten the slope length exposed to overland flow, the area where sheet and rill erosion occurs. Modern terrace systems are mostly parallel. They are easier to farm and maintain. Terraces are one of a number of conservation prao tices used to reduce erosion. In most cases, one or more additional conservation practices are used with terraces to complete a conservation system (fig. How well terraces do the job they are meant to do depends on how they are farmed. A great many terraces have been built on farm land in the United States during the last few years. Many more are needed. Terraces would probably be more widely used if farmers understood how easy it is to farm them when they are built right. Some of the early terraces were built with the ridges and channels too narrow. This made a definite obstruction to normal farming Operations. Properly built terraces with broad ridges and channels are essential if farming Operations are to be successfully and easily performed. One way to make terraces easier to farm, particularly with row crops, is to build them parallel to each other. This is not possible on all land that needs terracing. If you are planning to build terraces, you may want to check with the Soil Conservation Service technician assigned to your soil conservation district to see if parallel terraces can be constructed on your land. Excerpt from Farm Science Snapshots: October, 1930 Scientists of the State Experiment Stations continue active in a hundred fields, and more. Two interesting experimental resilts-announced this month come from.texas. Scientists of the Lone Star State have been studying erosion at various points. Results announced for the station near Spur, Texas, show some surprising figures on run-off of water. At that place the researchers found only 60 per cent of the rainfall absorbed by the soil. The water ran off both gentle and sharp slopes impartially. But it took: the soil along from sharp slopes. The Texans conclude that a slope greater than one per cent is in danger of losing soil by erosion. Crop cover and obstructions both were effective in saving soil. One finding of interest to farmers in Texas was that the level terrace was better than a terrace built with.a slope of 3 inches in 100 feet. Level terraces saved more water and also produced 109 pounds more of seed cotton per acre than die the sloped terraces. Those Texas experimenters also have been working for a long time to find out the effects of sulphur as a fertilizer. Now they announce the results. Saying, The res1lts obtained at six places in Texas indicate that sulphur would not increase the yield of crops in general and consequently its use as a fertilizer would not be profitable. Human activity during centuries of occupation significantly altered the landscape inhabited by the ancient Maya of northwestern Belize. In response, the Maya developed new techniques to harvest the natural resources of their surroundings, investing increased labor and raw materials into maintaining and even improving their ways of life. In this lively story of life in the wetlands on the outskirts of the major site of La Milpa, Julie Kunen documents a hitherto unrecognized form of intensive agriculture in the Maya lowlands—one that relied on the construction of terraces and berms to trap soil and moisture around the margins of low-lying depressions called bajos. She traces the intertwined histories of residential settlements on nearby hills and ridges and agricultural terraces and other farming-related features around the margins of the bajo as they developed from the Late Preclassic perios (400 BC-AD 250) until the area's abandonment in the Terminal Classic period (about AD 850). Kunen examines the organization of three bajo communities with respect to the use and management of resources critical to agricultural production. She argues that differences in access to spatially variable natural resources resulted in highly patterned settlement remains and that community founders and their descendents who had acquired the best quality and most diverse set of resources maintained an elevated status in the society. The thorough integration of three lines of evidence—the settlement system, the agricultural system, and the ancient environment—breaks new ground in landscape research and in the study of Maya non-elite domestic organization. Kunen reports on the history of settlement and farming in a small corner of the Maya world but demonstrates that for any study of human-environment interactions, landscape history consists equally of ecological and cultural strands of influence.
