Excerpt from Famous American Statesmen Orators, Past and Present, Vol. 1: With Biographical Sketches and Their Famous Orations "Oratory," said Abraham Lincoln, "is the great power that moves nations to do and dare; it was oratory that wrecked Rome and made Christianity live." None of our public men better understand the power of oratory than did Lincoln, and he estimated it from its highest plane. He would not have been a great orator in Rome when Roman people were swayed by the impassioned eloquence of their orators to deify to-day and crucify to-morrow, but he was one of the greatest of American orators of the rare type that always appeals to the considerate judgment of mankind. The power of the impassioned oratory that swayed the ancients in the days of Demosthenes has been impaired by the growing in culture and thoughtfulness of the people of all nations. There are occasions when it is yet most appropriate and impressive, but they are rare. It at times asserts itself in great trials in our courts of justice, but its impressions speedily perish, unless they appeal to some enduring human sympathy. Senator Depew truthfully says, "Eloquence is the master element in politics," but political oratory in this country, like the political oratory of every other civilized country of the world, has materially changed in its most effective attributes. In the days of Thomas Corwin of Ohio, and Sargent S. Prentiss of Mississippi, the political orator was the sole dependence of political parties. The newspaper was then a luxury and did not reach the masses of the people. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Famous American Statesmen Orators, Past and Present, Vol. 5 of 6: With Biographical Sketches and Their Famous Orations It is good for us to commemorate this homespun past Of ours; good in these days Of reckless and swag gering prosperity, to remind ourselves how poor our fathers were, and that we celebrate them because for themselves and their children they chose wisdom and understanding and the things that are Of God rather than any other riches. This is our Founder's Day. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Famous American Statesmen and Orators, Past and Present, Vol. 4 of 6: With Biographical Sketches and Their Famous Orations What a happy conception, then, was it for Congress to apply this simple rule, that the will of the majority shall govern, to the settlement of the question of domestic slavery in the Territories! Congress is neither to legislate slavery into any Territory or State, nor to exclude it therefrom, but to leave the people thereof perfectly free to form and regulate their domestic institutions in their own way, subject only to the Constitution of the United States. Excerpt from Famous American Statesmen Orators, Past and Present, Vol. 6 of 6: With Biographical Sketches and Their Famous Orations The Republic could not retreat if it would; whatever its destiny, it must proceed. For the American Re public is a part of the movement of a race, - the most masterful race of history, - and race movements are not to be stayed by the hand of man. They are mighty answers to Divine commands. Their leaders are not only statesmen of peoples - they are prophets of God. The inherent tendencies of a race are its highest law. They precede and survive all statutes, all constitutions. The first question real statesman ship asks is: What are the abiding characteristics of my people? From that basis all reasoning may be natural and true. From any other basis all reasoning must be artificial and false. The sovereign tendencies of our race are organization and government. We govern so well that we govern ourselves. We organize by instinct. Under the flag of England our race builds an empire out of the ends of earth. In Australia it is to-day erecting a nation out of fragments. In America it wove out of segregated settlements that complex and wonderful organization called the American Republic. Every where it builds. Everywhere it governs. Every where it administers order and law. Everywhere it is the spirit of regulated liberty. Everywhere it obeys that Voice not to be denied which bids us strive and rest not, makes of us our brothers' keeper, and appoints us steward under God of the civilization of the world. Organization means growth. Government means administration. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Famous American Statesmen and Orators, Past and Present, Vol. 2 of 6: With Biographical Sketches and Their Famous Orations Another reason why we loved him was that he first loved us. I do not believe a ruler ever lived who loved his people more sincerely than he. Nay, I do not believe the ruler ever lived who loved his ene mies SO well as he. All the insults heaped upon him by the foes Of the government and the haters Of his principles, purposes, and person, never seemed to gen erate in him a feeling Of revenge or stir him to thoughts and deeds Of bitterness. Throughout the terrible war over which he presided with such calm ness and such power he never lost Sight Of the golden day, far in the indefinite future, when peace and the restoration Of fraternal harmony should come as the result and reward Of all his labors. His - heart em braced in its catholic sympathies the misguided men who were plotting his destruction, and I have no doubt that he could and did Offer the prayer Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do! We felt - we knew - that he suffered a thousand deaths in the destruction Of the brave lives he had summoned to the country's defence, that he sympathized with every mourner in this mourning land, that he called us to no sacrifice which he would not gladly have made himself, that his heart was with the humble and the oppressed, and that he had no higher wish than to see his people peaceful, prosperous, and happy. He was One Of us - one with us. Circumscribed in his affectionate regard by no creed or party, or caste, or color, he received everybody, talked with every body, respected everybody, loved everybody, and loved to serve everybody.
