Along the old cloister walls and gardens, hung with roses, glided the slow, grey-green waters of the Dylen. I had received a letter which I wished to forget; I stood upon the bridge, looking down to the narrow dark stream, and tore the letter to pieces and watched the frag. Excerpt from Thou Shalt Not Bear False Witness Against Thy Neighbour: A Letter to the Editor of the English Review On one point, where a grave censure is deduced from a misapprehension of the facts, I must st0p to correct that misapprehension. The Reviewer says (p. That it appears from the narrative that Archdeacon Hare had - urged Sterling to take holy orders at a period when he must have been conscious that the tendency of his early education was negative. When a person holding Arch deacon Hare's situation tells us that he has strongly urged a man of sceptical and unsound views to take holy orders, - a man with whose Opinions he was fully acquainted, we must say that an encouragement is at once held out to any amount of indifference, however criminal, in the choice and recommendation of candidates for holy orders. What condition can be more essential to the due exercise of the Christian Ministry, than a firm belief in the doctrines of Christianity? It is utterly false that Sterling at no time possest a firm belief in the doctrines of Christianity. The Memoir of his life Shews that for a long time he did receive those doctrines fully. So did be for a long time receive the Scriptures as inspired, although his view of the mode of inspiration differed from the common one. Again, it is not true that I was acquainted with Sterling's sceptical and unsound views, and with the negative tendency of his early education, at the time when I recommended him to take orders. Of course, in the narrative of his life, I. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Forgeries and False Entries The expert testimony of the chemist is looked upon by the composite juryman as something above any skepticism of his, and the very mystery to him of the whole analysis is something in his mind that places the state ments made by the expert beyond any shadow of doubt or criticism of his. Why? Because the expert in chemistry has practically established his case as soon as he has qualified as a witness, and whatever he says bearing on his analysis is accepted as a statement of facts as they exist, provided only that another in the same line equally qualified does not contradict him; and what is the te sult then? Chaos; for no combination of twelve jurymen, judge, and opposing counsel ever was or ever will be assembled that could decide which was right and which wrong.
