This thesis investigates the impact of individual, team and pedagogical factors on individual and team level outcomes in the context of entrepreneurship education. Despite the growth in research focused on entrepreneurship education in recent decades, there are on-going concerns about methodological rigor within the domain. Furthermore, few researchers have explored the student team in entrepreneurship education. Drawing primarily on Social Cognitive Career Theory and the Input-Mediator-Output framework, this study explores the influence of factors such as entrepreneurial self-efficacy, entrepreneurial intentionality, creativity, and entrepreneurial experience on individual and student team outcomes. A series of four quantitative studies were conducted, drawing on 1,004 third-level students and 185 student teams. In synthesising the findings with extant knowledge, a definition and research framework for the student team in entrepreneurship education is presented. The key findings indicate that in entrepreneurship education, students with entrepreneurial experience have higher entrepreneurial intentionality and founding passion, while student teams with entrepreneurship experience are associated with better team processes, higher performance, and more innovative outcomes. Furthermore, entrepreneurial self-efficacy predicts entrepreneurial intentions, subject interest, and reduces social loafing. In addition, perceptions of creativity, creativity training, and supportive climates for innovation (team and institutional) are positive predictors of individual and team outcomes. The study provides a critical review of prominent entrepreneurship theories, and provides a contextual revision of an individual trait-based measure of entrepreneurial tendencies. By using novel operationalisations of key constructs the team-level studies, greater insight into team emergent states and misalignment is provided. It is the first study to examine cognitive team separation variables in context. Pedagogically, the four studies provide actionable insights for the educator in areas such as training, team selection, and mitigation of social loafing, thus enhancing the delivery of entrepreneurship education, and supporting a stronger ecosystem conducive to student entrepreneurial development.

Abstract Considerable research has been carried out on entrepreneurship in efforts to understand its incidence in order to influence and maximize its benefits. Essentially, researchers and policy makers have sought to understand the link between individuals and business creation: Why some people start businesses while others do not. The research indicates that personality traits, individual background factors and association of entrepreneurship with career choice and small business enterprises, cannot sufficiently explain entrepreneurship. It is recognized that entrepreneurship is an intentional process and based on Ajzen0́9s Theory of Planned Behavior, the most defining characteristic of entrepreneurship is the intention to start a business. The purpose of this study was, therefore, to examine factors that influence entrepreneurial intention in high school students in Kenya. Specifically, the study aimed at determining if there were relationships between the perceptions of desirability, and feasibility of entrepreneurship with entrepreneurial intention of the students, identifying any difference in these perceptions with students of different backgrounds, and developing a model to predict entrepreneurship in the students. The study, therefore, tested how well Ajzen0́9s Theory of Planned Behavior applied in the Kenyan situation. A questionnaire was developed and administered to 969 final year high school students at a critical important point in their career decision making. Participants were selected using a combined convenience and random sampling technique, considering gender, rural/urban location, cost, and accessibility. Survey was the major method of data collection. Data analysis methods included descriptive statistics, correlation, ANOVA, factor analysis, effect size, and regression analysis. iii The findings of this study corroborate results from past studies. Attitudes are found to influence intention, and the attitudes to be moderated by individual background factors. Perceived personal desirability of entrepreneurship was found to have the greatest influence on entrepreneurial intention and perceived feasibility the lowest. The study findings also showed that perceived social desirability and feasibility of entrepreneurship contributed to perception of personal desirability, and that the background factors, including gender and prior experience, influenced entrepreneurial intention both directly and indirectly. In addition, based on the literature reviewed, the study finds that entrepreneurship promotion requires reduction of the high small business mortality rate and creation of both entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial opportunities (Kruger, 2000; Shane & Venkataraman, 2000). These findings have theoretical and practical implications for researchers, policy makers, teachers, and other entrepreneurship practitioners in Kenya.

Entrepreneurship has been positioned as a panacea to the economic development challenges facing Nigeria. Subsequent Nigerian governments have sought to foster a vibrant entrepreneurial class by investing in entrepreneurship education at the tertiary level. While that investment has yielded increased levels of entrepreneurial participation, it has had limited impact in terms of entrepreneurial business growth. Thus, there emerges a need to understand what factors influence entrepreneurial business growth in Nigeria and how successful Nigerian entrepreneurs learn to grow their businesses to inform future national human resource development (NHRD) policy. Consequently, this study explored how successful entrepreneurs in Nigeria learn to grow a business and identified what knowledge, skills, and abilities they used to facilitate business growth. In addition, the study explored the factors that Nigerian entrepreneurs thought influenced business growth. Using grounded theory as a research methodology, I conducted interviews with twenty successful Nigerian entrepreneurs to obtain data. The data indicated that successful Nigerian entrepreneurs are self-directed learners who engaged in a range of learning activities in which micro-learning processes incidentally occur. Further, participants identified eight task-related knowledge, skills, and abilities they relied on to succeed. They described five factors they believed influenced entrepreneurial business growth and noted that these factors influenced business growth in different ways. The data suggested that the human capital of the entrepreneur mediates the influence of the business environment on enterprise growth. Further, the data strongly indicated that the human capital of the entrepreneur, conceived as discrete task-related knowledge, skills, and abilities developed over time, was the most important factor that determined whether business growth occurred. Overall, the study advances our understanding of the role of learning in entrepreneurial growth in Nigeria and highlights the need to develop holistic NHRD policies that seek to develop the human capital of the entrepreneur, and the institutional environment to increase entrepreneurial success in Nigeria and engender economic development. The study offers recommendations for policy makers, educators in Nigerian Universities, entrepreneurs at large, and suggestions for future research.
