Excerpt from Fact and Fiction in Holy Writ: Or Book and World Wonders This book has had birth in a desire to show that most of the objections, if not all of them, made by people of a skeptical turn against the Bible are not well founded. We know there are some things in the Scriptures which do not accord with the observations and experiences of mankind in these modern times, and hence by some have been relegated to the domain of myths and legends, and classed with the vagaries and superstitions of unlettered tribes and ages. We also have endeavored to make plain the fact that in the natural world and in history as well there also have been some strange, yes, very wonderful things, which, had they been written in the Bible, would have been declared impossible, unbelievable. Throughout we have endeavored to be as true to the teachings of science as to Scripture, for both lead the mind to God. But is it not a fact that very many people think more about the mysteries in this book than they do about the simple statements of belief and the duties which are inculcated? More time is spent by some persons over the unessential than over the essentials. This grows, in part, at least, out of the natural desire of the mind to seek out hidden things. Holy Writ is not `chicken soup for the writer's soul'. It isn't a guide for getting in touch with your inner Nobel prize winner either, or a twelve-step program for recovery from writer's block. Holy Writ is one author's examination of the creative and spiritual sides of her life. Often hilarious, always unorthodox, K.D. Miller's reflections on writing as a form of worship, selfishness as a virtue and church-going as a necessary evil, will delight believer and skeptic alike. In several of the essays, she is joined by colleagues from the writing community -- practising Catholic Philip Marchand, one-time Quaker Elizabeth Hay and atheist Russell Smith among them.
