The following study explores how cultural heritage can reveal itself in the artwork of Cuban-American students. The goal for this research was to create an opportunity to use the making of narrative art by Cuban-American students as a means to explore and communicate their cultural heritage. The research method for obtaining information is qualitative, primarily participant observation and case study. The research was conducted during the teaching of an onsite art class in a culturally diverse area of Miami. The students, Cuban-Americans, interviewed their own families and then created artwork depicting their cultural stories. Whole class student discussions occurred before and after the students created their art. Individual interviews between the students and myself provided additional information. The students' comments, stories and reactions were documented and analyzed. The students' artwork was exhibited at their school, on a blog: www.blendingcolorswithcuba.blogspot.com and in the gallery of a local community art center. My capstone paper describes my research process, findings and recommendations. First, I discuss the relationship between cultural heritage and the effective teacher. Then, I describe how narrative art can increase cultural awareness among teachers and students. Finally, I share a key finding from this study: narrative art created from family stories is an authentic avenue for exploring cultural heritage. Additionally, I found that location, experiences and family dynamics influence a student's level of cultural knowledge. Recommendations include guidelines for culturally responsive teaching. I conclude this capstone paper with insights regarding the importance of understanding that a student0́9s perception of cultural heritage is oftentimes formed through the stories that he or she hears.

The role of cultural heritage and museums in constructing national identity in postcolonial Cuba During Fidel Castro's rule, Cuban revolutionaries coopted and reinterpreted the previous bourgeois national narrative of Cuba, aligning it with revolutionary ideology through the use of heritage and public symbols. By changing uses of the past in the present, they were able to shift ideologies, power relations, epistemological conceptions, and economic contexts into the Cuba we know today. Cuban Cultural Heritage explores the role that cultural heritage and museums played in the construction of a national identity in postcolonial Cuba. Starting with independence from Spain in 1898 and moving through Cuban-American rapprochement in 2014, Pablo Alonso González illustrates how political and ideological shifts have influenced ideas about heritage and how, in turn, heritage has been used by different social actors to reiterate their status, spread new ideologies, and consolidate political regimes. Miami is widely considered the center of Cuban-American culture. However vital to the diasporic communities’ identity, Miami is not the only—or necessarily the most profound—site of cultural production. Looking beyond South Florida, Ricardo L. Ortíz addresses the question of Cuban-American diaspora and cultural identity by exploring the histories and self-sustaining practices of smaller communities in such U.S. cities as Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York. In this wide-ranging work Ortíz argues for the authentically diasporic quality of postrevolutionary, off-island Cuban experience. Highlighting various forms of cultural expression, Cultural Erotics in Cuban America traces underrepresented communities’ responses to the threat of cultural disappearance in an overwhelming and hegemonic U.S. culture. Ortíz shows how the work of Cuban-American writers and artists challenges the heteronormativity of both home and host culture. Focusing on artists who have had an ambivalent, indirect, or nonexistent connection to Miami, he presents close readings of such novelists as Reinaldo Arenas, Roberto G. Fernández, Achy Obejas, and Cristina García, the playwright Eduardo Machado, the poet Rafael Campo, and musical performers Albita Rodríguez and Celia Cruz. Originally published in 2003, The Light Inside is a ground-breaking study of an Afro-Cuban secret society, its sacred arts, and their role in modern Cuban cultural history. Enslaved Africans and creoles developed the Abakuá Society, a system of men’s fraternal lodges, in urban Cuba beginnings in 1836. Drawing on years of fieldwork in the country, the book’s novel approach builds on close readings of dazzling Abakuá altars, chalk-drawn signs, and hooded masquerades. It looks at the art history of Abakuá altars, not only tracing changing styles but also how they evolve through cycles of tradition and renovation. The Light Inside reflects the essence of the artists’ creativity and experience: through adornment, altars project the powerful spirituality of Abakuá practice, an aesthetic strategy. The book also traces a biography of Abakuá objects – their shifting forms and meanings – as they participated in successive periods of Cuban cultural history. The book constructs close rhetorical and visual analyses of changing representations of the Abakuá, spanning nineteenth-century arts and letters, modern ethnographic texts, museum displays, paintings, and late twentieth century commercial kitsch.
