Most of the real-life signals are non-stationary in nature. The examples of such signals include biomedical signals, communication signals, speech, earthquake signals, vibration signals, etc. Time-frequency analysis plays an important role for extracting the meaningful information from these signals. The book presents time-frequency analysis methods together with their various applications. The basic concepts of signals and different ways of representing signals have been provided. The various time-frequency analysis techniques namely, short-time Fourier transform, wavelet transform, quadratic time-frequency transforms, advanced wavelet transforms, and adaptive time-frequency transforms have been explained. The fundamentals related to these methods are included. The various examples have been included in the book to explain the presented concepts effectively. The recently developed time-frequency analysis techniques such as, Fourier-Bessel series expansion-based methods, synchrosqueezed wavelet transform, tunable-Q wavelet transform, iterative eigenvalue decomposition of Hankel matrix, variational mode decomposition, Fourier decomposition method, etc. have been explained in the book. The numerous applications of time-frequency analysis techniques in various research areas have been demonstrated. This book covers basic concepts of signals, time-frequency analysis, and various conventional and advanced time-frequency analysis methods along with their applications. The set of problems included in the book will be helpful to gain an expertise in time-frequency analysis. The material presented in this book will be useful for students, academicians, and researchers to understand the fundamentals and applications related to time-frequency analysis.

Time-frequency analysis is a modern branch of harmonic analysis. It com prises all those parts of mathematics and its applications that use the struc ture of translations and modulations (or time-frequency shifts) for the anal ysis of functions and operators. Time-frequency analysis is a form of local Fourier analysis that treats time and frequency simultaneously and sym metrically. My goal is a systematic exposition of the foundations of time-frequency analysis, whence the title of the book. The topics range from the elemen tary theory of the short-time Fourier transform and classical results about the Wigner distribution via the recent theory of Gabor frames to quantita tive methods in time-frequency analysis and the theory of pseudodifferential operators. This book is motivated by applications in signal analysis and quantum mechanics, but it is not about these applications. The main ori entation is toward the detailed mathematical investigation of the rich and elegant structures underlying time-frequency analysis. Time-frequency analysis originates in the early development of quantum mechanics by H. Weyl, E. Wigner, and J. von Neumann around 1930, and in the theoretical foundation of information theory and signal analysis by D.

Over the course of a scientific career spanning more than fifty years, Alex Grossmann (1930-2019) made many important contributions to a wide range of areas including, among others, mathematics, numerical analysis, physics, genetics, and biology. His lasting influence can be seen not only in his research and numerous publications, but also through the relationships he cultivated with his collaborators and students. This edited volume features chapters written by some of these colleagues, as well as researchers whom Grossmann’s work and way of thinking has impacted in a decisive way. Reflecting the diversity of his interests and their interdisciplinary nature, these chapters explore a variety of current topics in quantum mechanics, elementary particles, and theoretical physics; wavelets and mathematical analysis; and genomics and biology. A scientific biography of Grossmann, along with a more personal biography written by his son, serve as an introduction. Also included are the introduction to his PhD thesis and an unpublished paper coauthored by him. Researchers working in any of the fields listed above will find this volume to be an insightful and informative work.

This hands-on, laboratory driven textbook helps readers understand principles of digital signal processing (DSP) and basics of software-based digital communication, particularly software-defined networks (SDN) and software-defined radio (SDR). In the book only the most important concepts are presented. Each book chapter is an introduction to computer laboratory and is accompanied by complete laboratory exercises and ready-to-go Matlab programs with figures and comments (available at the book webpage and running also in GNU Octave 5.2 with free software packages), showing all or most details of relevant algorithms. Students are tasked to understand programs, modify them, and apply presented concepts to recorded real RF signal or simulated received signals, with modelled transmission condition and hardware imperfections. Teaching is done by showing examples and their modifications to different real-world telecommunication-like applications. The book consists of three parts: introduction to DSP (spectral analysis and digital filtering), introduction to DSP advanced topics (multi-rate, adaptive, model-based and multimedia - speech, audio, video - signal analysis and processing) and introduction to software-defined modern telecommunication systems (SDR technology, analog and digital modulations, single- and multi-carrier systems, channel estimation and correction as well as synchronization issues). Many real signals are processed in the book, in the first part – mainly speech and audio, while in the second part – mainly RF recordings taken from RTL-SDR USB stick and ADALM-PLUTO module, for example captured IQ data of VOR avionics signal, classical FM radio with RDS, digital DAB/DAB+ radio and 4G-LTE digital telephony. Additionally, modelling and simulation of some transmission scenarios are tested in software in the book, in particular TETRA, ADSL and 5G signals. Provides an introduction to digital signal processing and software-based digital communication; Presents a transition from digital signal processing to software-defined telecommunication; Features a suite of pedagogical materials including a laboratory test-bed and computer exercises/experiments.

This authoritative text studies pseudodifferential and Fourier integral operators in the framework of time-frequency analysis, providing an elementary approach, along with applications to almost diagonalization of such operators and to the sparsity of their Gabor representations. Moreover, Gabor frames and modulation spaces are employed to study dispersive equations such as the Schrödinger, wave, and heat equations and related Strichartz problems. The first part of the book is addressed to non-experts, presenting the basics of time-frequency analysis: short time Fourier transform, Wigner distribution and other representations, function spaces and frames theory, and it can be read independently as a short text-book on this topic from graduate and under-graduate students, or scholars in other disciplines.
