Excerpt from Experiments on Copper Crusher Cylinders The dynamic method consists of determining the velocities of the gun in recoil or of the shot at different points of the bore. The difference of the velocities divided by the corresponding differences of the time equal the acceleration. The pressure required to produce the observed acceleration in a body whose mass is that of the gun or of the projectile is obtained by multi plying the acceleration by the mass. The crusher-gage method was proposed in 1868 by Noble, and up to the present time is regarded as the most convenient known method for obtaining an idea of the relative values of pressures in guns. In 1901 the National Bureau of Standards (NBS) was founded to provide standard weights and measures and to be the national physical laboratory for the United States of America. The NBS conducted a lot of research in the fields of science and technology which were reported as "Technological Papers." In 1988 the NBS became what we know now; the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). This is one of those documents written by employees of the NBS.

Records of pressures were obtained by using the same copper crusher cylinders for several rounds. These were compared with the pressures obtained by the usual method during the firing of pressure rounds in the 105 mm, 12 inch and 14 inch guns. (Author).
