Since the discovery of plate tectonics, geophysicists have sought to understand the dynamic system driving the evolution of the earth, both at the surface and in the deep interior. While the deep earth contains far fewer phases than the crust, the inaccessibility of the mantle and core present a different challenge: unraveling the physical behavior of materials at conditions beyond our intuitive, observational, and experimental grasp. Among the most persistent of problems has been determining the influence of pressure on the mechanical behavior of deep rocks. Deformation experiments have typically been limited by equipment capabilities to only a tiny fraction of the pressure of the deep mantle, and thus our understanding pressure effect on rock strength has remained insufficient to precisely model the convection of the mantle at large scales in time and space. In the last decade, a promising new campaign in mantle rheology has been waged with two powerful emerging technologies: synchrotron x-ray diffraction, and complementary multi-anvil deformation machines. These advancements have allowed precisely controlled deformation experiments at conditions representative of the deep upper mantle, with unprecedented measurement precision. Here I present a detailed experimental study of the behavior of olivine at upper mantle conditions. Among the results is evidence of a significant pressure effect on the strength of olivine (an activation volume of 14 ± 3 cm3/mol), as well as pioneering in situ measurements of fabric development, slip system transitions, and stress heterogeneity.

The ductile deformation and flow of the upper mantle controls a wide variety of geologic phenomena, including the flexure of plates below glaciers, the formation of new plate boundaries, and the movement of tectonic plates. Olivine, the main mineral of the upper mantle, controls mantle deformation behavior, responding differently to applied stresses depending on the deformation conditions (including temperature, pressure, and composition). This dissertation provides constraints on the rheological properties of the Earth's upper mantle across multiple deformation regimes. In Chapter 1, I use nanoindentation experiments to show that the strength of olivine deforming at low temperatures and high stresses is controlled by its grain size, with smaller grains being stronger than larger grains. As the lithospheric mantle has a relatively large grain size, the mantle is likely weaker than many previous studies have suggested. Deformation throughout the lithosphere is sensitive to small concentrations of water, down to the parts per million level in olivine. Chapter 2 contains a comprehensive description of the methodology necessary for measuring water in the nominally anhydrous minerals of the upper mantle: olivine, orthopyroxene, and clinopyroxene. Using this methodology, I measured water in samples from ductile shear zones in the Josephine Peridotite. In Chapter 3, I examine the relationship between water content and the lattice preferred orientation (LPO) of olivine. Previous experiments found that olivine LPO, and thus the dominant active slip system, changes with increasing water content. However, my measurements suggest that the olivine LPO in the shear zones does not vary as a function of water content, and I use micromechanical modeling to show that deformation kinematics can drive the observed LPO changes. Chapter 4 then examines the role of water in shear localization in the same set of shear zones. While water concentrations are elevated relative to other peridotite settings like mid-ocean ridges, my geochemical data indicate that melt was the initial factor that led to shear localization.

Volume 25 of Reviews in Mineralogy was published to be used as the textbook for the Short Course on Fe-Ti Oxides: Their Petrologic and Magnetic Significance, held May 24-27, 1991, organized by B.R. Frost, D.H. Lindsley, and SK Banerjee and jointly sponsored by the Mineralogical Society of America and the American Geophysical Union. It has been fourteen and a half years since the last MSA Short Course on Oxide Minerals and the appearance of Volume 3 of Reviews in Mineralogy. Much progress has been made in the interim. This is particularly evident in the coverage of the thermodynamic properties of oxide minerals: nothing in Volume 3, while in contrast, Volume 25 has three chapters (6, 7, and 8) presenting various aspects of the thermodynamics of oxide minerals; and other chapters (9, 11, 12) build extensively on thermodynamic models. The coverage of magnetic properties has also been considerably expanded (Chapters 4, 8, and 14). Finally, the interaction of oxides and silicates is emphasized in Chapters 9, 11, 12, 13, and 14. Because Volume 3 is out of print and will not be readily available to newcomers to our science, as much as possible we have tried to make Volume 25 a replacement for, rather than a supplement to, the earlier volume. Chapters on crystal chemistry, phase equilibria, and oxide minerals in both igneous and metamorphic rocks have been rewritten or extensively revised.
