The book is subdivided into seven sections this encompass: general procedures, like methods of pipetting, solution preparation, buffers and principles of common analytical instruments essential for laboratory biotechnology experiments. The book also includes working with nucleic acid, bacteria, enzymes, proteins; cloning experiments and a few protocols on plant biotechnology. Emphasis have been given on DNA/RNA isolation from various sources, use of restriction enzymes, ligation techniques, cloning protocols, screening of transformed cells, various electrophoresis techniques, PCR protocol, etc. The appendices in the last part are included to provide information important to he study of the above-mentioned practical as a whole. The book will be useful to students belonging to Biotechnology, agriculture and allied fields. The idea behind this practical manual was thus to provide theoretical basis of the practical study items to be undertaken in the laboratory in a lucid manner.

The title "Nano Biotechnology for Biomedical and Diagnostics Research" will address research aspects related to nanomaterial in imaging and biological research, nanomaterials as a biosensing tool, DNA nanotechnology, nanomaterials for drug delivery, medicinal and therapeutic application and cytotoxicity of nanomaterials. These topics will be covered by 16 different manuscripts. Amongst the authors that will contribute to the book are major scientific leaders such as S. Weiss - UCLA, I. Willner, and G. Golomb – HUJI, S. Esener - UCSD, E.C. Simmel - Tech. Univ. Munchen, I. Medintz – NRL, N. Hildebrandt - Université Paris and more. The manuscripts in the book intend to present specifically biological, diagnostics and medical problems with their potential solution by nano technology or materials. In this respect this book is unique, since it would arise from the biological problems to the nano technology possible solution and not vice versa.

Molecular Biology and Biotechnology: basic experimental protocols is a compilation of methods and techniques commonly used in biomedical and biotechnological studies. The book aims to provide ample support to both students and faculty while conducting practical lessons. Four sections are covered in this book—Genomics, Proteomics, Quantitative Biochemistry, and Bioinformatics. A concise introductory note accompanies each protocol/method described for better comprehension. Every topic discussed is supported by actual methods and their expected results, and is accompanied by relevant questions.

In recent years much has happened to justify an examination of biological research in light of national security concerns. The destructive application of biotechnology research includes activities such as spreading common pathogens or transforming them into even more lethal forms. Policymakers and the scientific community at large must put forth a vigorous and immediate response to this challenge. This new book by the National Research Council recommends that the government expand existing regulations and rely on self-governance by scientists rather than adopt intrusive new policies. One key recommendation of the report is that the government should not attempt to regulate scientific publishing but should trust scientists and journals to screen their papers for security risks, a task some journals have already taken up. With biological information and tools widely distributed, regulating only U.S. researchers would have little effect. A new International Forum on Biosecurity should encourage the adoption of similar measures around the world. Seven types of risky studies would require approval by the Institutional Biosafety Committees that already oversee recombinant DNA research at some 400 U.S. institutions. These "experiments of concern" include making an infectious agent more lethal and rendering vaccines powerless.

Provides a grounding in the experimental techniques applicable to the discipline of biotechnology. The introductory section in the text describes procedures for analysis of inorganic and organic materials, strain maintenance and fundamental experiments in gene manipulation. Other chapters deal with fermentation techniques, purification methods for substances of interest, preparation of microbial sensors and the demonstration of oil degradation by bacteria. The final chapter deals with statistical planning of experiments and scale-up methods.
