She was born at Kinderhook, New York, in 1793, and made her debut at the Federal Street Theatre, Boston, in 1813, as Miss Mortimer in "Laugh When You Can." In May, 1825, she was a member of Price and Simpson's traveling dramatic and equestrian company, at the Broadway Circus, New York. In 1825-6, she played at the Lafayette Amphitheatre; also at the Park, Bowery and Old Chatham Theatres, New York. She afterwards resided principally in Boston, where, under her husband's management, she became one of the principal attractions of the Tremont and National Theatres, and was accounted one of the very best actresses of her day. She retired from the stage, for several years, but was obliged to return to it in 1850, when Mr. Pelby died, leaving her the direction of the National Theatre, which was sold to pay the debts of the estate, leaving her almost without resources. In 1853 she went to California, with her daughter, Julia, but her fortunes were not mended by her stay in the Golden State. During her voyage homeward, on board the steamer "Northern Light," near San Juan del Sud, in June, 1855, she was seized with her last illness, and made her exit from the stage of life, in the 64th year of her age. 2.
