Excited states for isospin $\frac{1}{2}$ baryons are calculated using lattice QCD with two flavors of dynamical quarks. Anisotropic lattices are used with two pion masses, $m_{\pi} = 416(36)$~MeV and $578(29)$~MeV. A large number of baryon operators is developed. They are pruned to sets of 16 and a variational analysis is carried out for $16\times 16$ matrices of correlation functions. The lowest four energies are reported in each of the six irreducible representations of the octahedral group at each pion mass. The lattices used have dimensions $24^3\times 64$, spatial lattice spacing $a_s \approx 0.11$~fm and temporal lattice spacing $a_t = \frac{1}{3} a_s$. Clear evidence is found for a $\frac{5}{2}^-$ state in the pattern of negative-parity excited states. This agrees with the pattern of physical states and spin $\frac{5}{2}$ has been realized for the first time on the lattice.

We compute the spectrum of excited nucleons using the anisotropic Wilson lattice with two flavors of dynamical fermions. Using optimized sets of operators which transform irreducibly under the octahedral group, matrices of correlation functions are computed. We apply the variational method to these matrices to extract excited energy eigenstates. We obtain several states for each irrep and identify the continuum spin for the lowest-lying states, including a $J^P={5/2}^-$ state.

By year 1911 radioactivity had been discovered for over a decade, but its origin remained a mystery. Rutherford's discovery of the nucleus and the subsequent discovery of the neutron by Chadwick started the field of subatomic physics — a quest for understanding the fundamental constituents of matter. This book reviews the important achievements in subatomic physics in the past century. The chapters are divided into two parts: nuclear physics and particle physics. Written by renowned authors who have made major developments in the field, this book provides the academics and researchers an essential overview of the present state of knowledge in nuclear and particle physics.

We present progress made by the Hadron Spectrum Collaboration (HSC) in determining the tower of excited nucleon states using 2+1-flavor anisotropic clover lattices. The HSC has been investigating interpolating operators projected into irreducible representations of the cubic group in order to better calculate two-point correlators for nucleon spectroscopy; results are published for quenched and 2-flavor anisotropic Wilson lattices. In this work, we present the latest results using a new technique, distillation, which allows us to reach higher statistics than before. Future directions will be outlined at the end.

We measure the spectrum of low-lying nucleon resonances using Bayesian fitting methods. We compare the masses obtained in the quenched approximation to those obtained with two flavours of dynamical fermions at a matched lattice spacing. At the pion masses employed in our simulations, we find that the mass of the first positive-parity nucleon excitation is always greater than that of the parity partner of the nucleon.
